A recent comment by Sen. Charles Schumer indicates that a first flexing of the newly empowered "progressive" muscle might be the exhumation of the odious "Fairness Doctrine".
Peter Kirsanow at NRO's "The Corner" sounds a clarion call...
Quote: | Defeating the Fairness Doctrine Now [Peter Kirsanow]
Imposition of some form of the Fairness Doctrine likely will be one of the Democrats' agenda items for the first 100 days of the new administration. It's important that conservatives begin working now to stop it.
<snip>
Waiting until Inauguration Day to get geared up is too late. By that time the Fairness Doctrine Express will be at full steam— wavering Democrats will be pressed to support the new Democratic president, weak-kneed Republicans will want to display comity, the mainstream media will not be saddened to see talk radio annihilated and much of the public will be too enraptured by Obama's Camelot inauguration to notice or care.
The Corner - cont'd |
This is an issue that should strike fear into the bi-partisan hearts of ANYONE interested in the preservation of our First Amendment rights.
To hell with a "Honeymoon"

I really despise the term "progressive. It is too PC. Call it what it is, Socialist.
I also despise the term "Fairness Doctrine". It, also, is too PC. Call it Censorship.
Calling these terms anything else is submitting to the socialist agenda. _________________ Swift Boats - Qui Nhon (12/69-4/70), Cat Lo (4/70-5/70), Vung Tau (5/70-12/71) |

Geez Jack...hardcore
However, just for the sake of argument, I think it's more effective in the long haul to use quotation marks around "their" terms and pejoratize them as the decrepit leftist/marxist concepts they are.

update: Hey Jack, I think K-Lo over at "The Corner" got your e-mail ...
Quote: | We Need a New Name for the Fairness Doctrine [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
An e-mail:Hear, hear to Peter Kirsanow, but one suggestion to the Corner and by extension NR: stop conceding the premise of the argument by calling an unconstitutional concept "The Fairness Doctrine."
SDI was maligned by the moniker "Star Wars." But the principle applies.
Call this one "The Gag Order." Or "Radio Silence." Make something up. I don't care. It's not "fair," and it can't be admitted that semantic legitimacy. The Corner |
OK...I'll yield..."The Gag Order" it is (and the topic is officially amended) |

Whatever term finally sticks, it will result in a lot of "Dead Air". |

I kinda like the term "Gag Order". It's much more descriptive than "Fairness". _________________ Swift Boats - Qui Nhon (12/69-4/70), Cat Lo (4/70-5/70), Vung Tau (5/70-12/71) |

Perhaps we've stumbled upon an amusing divergence to occupy ourselves while awaiting the inevitable socialist (that OK Jack?) attack upon our Constitutional rights...

I'ld go along with the Fairness Doctrine if the networks, cable and PBS as well had rebuttals. I don't think we'll have the dead trees around much longer. _________________ "KILL ALL THE LAWYERS!"

You may be on to something. Don't be surprised if the Democrats set up jamming stations in the defunct studios of what was once Air America...'bout all they're good for...what am I thinking, they ALREADY ARE jamming stations! |

The "fairness doctrine", whether applied to newspapers, talk radio, commercials or anything is an anti-1st-amendment attack. It should be met with the same zeal as attacks on the 2nd-amendment. Do not give a single inch. The left is very pleased to make their progress in baby steps and incremental little nibbles. They know that with time, they can add these up to do whatever their goal is.
The goals of liberals right now take on a notion of pseudo-goodness that is difficult to counter; and their targets are: Fairness, hate-speech, hate-crimes, sexual-harassment, racial harassment, politically incorrect speech and conduct of any kind, etc.
Who defines what is politically incorrect? It seems to be a moving target.
Being a jerk for stupid comments should not be rewarded by being labeled a criminal. It is just as effective to label the jerk a "jerk".
Children who are too young to know better should not be tagged as sexual predators.
This goal of the socialists is suppression of free speech; and it will be achieved through the subtle and incremental imposition of a thousand innocuous rules of conduct, each of which will seem benign.
It is up to us to see it for what it is and prevent it from coming to pass. _________________ Swift Boats - Qui Nhon (12/69-4/70), Cat Lo (4/70-5/70), Vung Tau (5/70-12/71) |

i find myself refusing to use PC words
they tend to twist words and meanings... which
confuses a lot of people - and they then think that
the new word used is a 'safe' word to use.
I don't think they are 'safe' words. they are used to
disguise 'their' socialist propaganda. _________________ Stevie
