What Would Jefferson Do?

Since some have tried to compare Obama to not only Lincoln but also Jefferson, let's take a trip down memory lane and see how Jefferson handled a similar situation.

Quote:
(from World Net Daily)

Congressman Keith Ellison (Hakim-Mohammad) (Muslim, Mnnesota) used the same Quran that Jefferson owned when he was sworn in, claiming that Thomas Jefferson gleaned knowledge from the Quran ...... someone needs to inform Ellison that it was knowledge about his enemies that Jefferson gleaned. A number of prominent historians agreed with Ellison, who used the Library of Congress Quran that Jefferson once owned for his ceremonial swearing-in to Congress, that Jefferson used the Quran for his own thinking, but they all stated that it was NOT for the reasons Ellison stated.

"There is no doubt Ellison was right about Jefferson believing wisdom could be 'gleaned' from the Muslim Quran". "At the time Jefferson owned the book, he needed to know everything possible about Muslims because he was about to advocate war against the Islamic 'Barbary' states of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Tripoli."

It was pointed out that for over 10 centuries, Muslim pirates had cruised the African and Mediterranean coastline, pillaging villages and abducting slaves, mostly by making pre-dawn raids that left high casualty rates.

"It was typical of Muslim raiders to kill off as many of the 'non-Muslim' older men and women as possible so the preferred 'booty' of only young women could be collected". The women were sought for their value as concubines in Islamic markets.

"Boys, as young as 9 or 10 years old, were often mutilated to create eunuchs who would bring higher prices in the slave markets of the Middle East".

When American colonists rebelled against the English in 1776, merchant ships from what later would be the United States lost British navy protection, and they were attacked "and their Christian crews enslaved by Muslim pirates operating under the control of the 'Dey of Algiers' – an Islamist warlord ruling Algeria."

The Continental Congress then met in 1784 to talk about treaties with leaders of the region, and John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were appointed to oversee the work.

"Tribute" and "ransoms" first were paid to the Muslim slavers, and Adams argued that was the cheapest way to get commerce moving. But Jefferson was opposed, proposing a settlement of the issue "through the medium of war."

Two years later, when Jefferson was ambassador to France, and Adams was ambassador to Britain, they met in London with Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, the ambassador to Britain from the "Dey of Algiers."

Seeking a peace treaty, based on Congress' vote to pay tribute, the two Americans asked the Dey's ambassador why Muslims had so much hostility towards America. They later reported to Congress the ambassador told them Islam "was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Quran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise."

For years the American government paid Muslims millions of dollars for the safe passage of American ships or the return of American hostages, but not long after Jefferson's inauguration in 1801, he dispatched the USS Constitution, USS Constellation, USS Philadelphia, USS Chesapeake, USS Argus, USS Syren and USS Intrepid to the Mediterranean.

Jefferson's first presidency coincided with what generally is called the Barbary Wars running from approximately 1801-1805. That year the Marines marched from Egypt into Tripolitania, freeing Americans held there as slaves.

Gary DeMar, president of AmericanVision.org, added his endorsement of this interpretation of history.

DeMar cites Joseph Wheelan's book, "Jefferson's War: America's First War on Terror," in noting Jefferson said, "Too long, for the honor of nations, have those Barbarians been [permitted] to trample on the sacred faith of treaties, on the rights and laws of human nature!"

DeMar notes that research treatise concludes that, "Jefferson's war pitted a modern republic with a free-trade, entrepreneurial creed against a medieval autocracy whose credo was piracy and terror. It matched an ostensibly Christian nation against an avowed Islamic one that professed to despise Christians."

"Wheelan's historical assessment of the time is on target," DeMar noted. "'Except for its Native American population and a small percentage of Jews, the United States was solidly Christian, while the North African regencies were just as solidly Muslim – openly hostile toward Christians.'"

"So what did Jefferson learn from the Quran?Unless a nation submitted to Islam, whether it was the aggressor or not, that nation was by definition at war with Islam. It's no wonder that Jefferson studied the Quran. He realized that if Americans ever capitulated, the Muslims would be singing 'From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of A-mer-i-ca,'" DeMar concluded.

...looks to me like we are back in the 7th through 19th Centuries again fighting Muslim Jihadi "Pirates"....too bad we have a reincarnation of Jimmy Carter at the controls instead of Thomas Jefferson.

A rescue that should have taken hours was dragged out for days due to the inability of Barack Obama to make a simple, basic decision. He made "no comment" for days, and finally his lawyers gave him forms to sign essentially allowing the Navy to do their jobs. For THAT he is now being praised as a leader? What else could he have done? Order the Navy NOT to do their jobs? He probably "focus grouped" that decision, too. Captain Phillips even performed a "dry run" of how to take out the Muslim Jihadis holding him by jumping overboard and allowing the SEAL Snipers a clear and unfettered shot at them, but at that opportunity, they lacked "authority" from President Pantywaist because he was still in the "we have to solve this diplomatically" mode. The Navy even sent a boat to draw fire to show Obama that negotiations would not work, and it was not until pressure mounted that the "negotiations" were breaking down and that the only option left was to take out the "Pirates" did Obama finally sign the forms on SATURDAY. He actually had to sign them twice; I guess he was afraid the first set wasn't sufficient or that each opportunity had to be authorized. Finally freed from the shackles of "political correctness" and ineptitude from the White House, the on-scene commander made the correct decision to take out the Pirates when the one "negotiating" with them said they would kill the Captain if their demands were not met and one of the Jihadis pointed an AK-47 at the Captain's back and it appeared he was about to shoot him. The same Navy that Obama wants to GUT, the one built first by Reagan and then rebuilt by G.W. Bush after Clinton decimated it, saved the Captain and deserves ALL the credit, in SPITE of Obama's inability to make a decision. Now if Obama would authorize razing the Pirate strongholds and blowing their ships out of the water upon sighting, THAT would be praiseworthy. SPIN that, Media Sycophants.

Internet Powerhouse Andy Martin: Thank you President George W. Bush for
rescuing Captain Richard Phillips

"Factually Correct, Not
Politically Correct"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Andy Martin thanks President George W. Bush for rescuing the U.S. ship
captain held hostage by Somali pirates

Obama's "Somali" response sent a message of weakness to our enemies,
says Martin

BHO's post-rescue "spin" is just typical Obama

Liberal media again distort the true significance of the rescue

(NEW YORK)(April 13, 2009) I don't often have good things to say about
former President George W. Bush. But today I want to thank him for the
rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, held hostage by Somali criminals and
rescued by the U. S. Navy.

The captain was rescued by George W. Bush's Navy, not Barack Obama's Navy.

I have never been much of a success as a politician because I insist on
telling audiences the truth, even when it goes against popular opinion.
The Bush Brothers and I are not friends. And political groups don't want
informed and independent opinion; they want red meat. Life is much more
complex. My ultimate loyalty is to the truth, and not to any individual
or party. I am a Republican by inclination, but not a Republican "right
or wrong."

That is why today I am alone in all of America's media in singing the
praises of President George W. Bush. He rescued Captain Phillips.

The "Navy" that was able to respond in the Indian Ocean was a navy
created by the Bush administration. While Bush may not have maintained
as large a navy as I would prefer, he kept our seafaring capabilities at
a high level.

Barack Obama wants to devastate the navy, and reduce our fleet to a
handful of tugboats and dinghies.

The "navy" that Barack Obama is trying to create with his proposed
defense programs would not have been able to rescue Captain Phillips.
Think about that for a minute. If Obama had been in office long enough
to succeed with his plans for the navy, there would not have been a
successful rescue of our hostage captain.

The liberal media, of course, are desperately trying to "spin" the
captain's rescue as a "victory" for the "young commander in chief who
had yet to prove himself to his generals or his public."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/12/AR2009041203002.html?hpid=topnews

Praise is pouring in for "Commander" Obama:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/cheat-sheet/white-house-cheat-sheet-14.html?hpid=topnews

Well, Obama "proved" himself all right. He proved he is an uncertain and
unsteady hand on the tiller. Obama wants to gut our defense capability
so he can "invest" in welfare checks for illegal immigrants. The navy
that he wants to create would lack a global reaction capability.

Obama has said nothing about cleaning out the land-based Somali pirate
nests, and he won't. They are Muslims. He will not become the scourge of
the Somali terrorists. Under an "Obamas Navy," Captain Phillips would
have been sitting in captivity for months.

Barack Obama proved he is the new Jimmy Carter.

Obama sent a strong message to both our friends and enemies: when there
is a crisis or conflict, he will hide in the White House basement until
it is safe to emerge and claim victory. His feckless behavior did not
deter future attacks on Americans. He has encouraged them. With each
passing day that Obama is in the White House our worldwide military
capability is being degraded and decreased.

Congress, are you listening?

And so, today I praise the real hero of yesterday's victory: President
George W. Bush, who kept America militarily strong and left behind a
Navy with the capability to rescue Captain Phillips.

Thank you President Bush. Thanks George. During your term in office you
took credit for a lot of things that you did not deserve credit for. But
today, quietly, you can take credit for leaving behind a U. S. Navy that
can respond around the world.

I salute you. And every man and woman in uniform should salute you.

Thank you President Bush for rescuing Captain Richard Phillips.

This is really your day, not Barack Obama's.

[And now you know what this column is called "Contrarian Commentary."]
