WASHINGTON – Robert S. McNamara, the cerebral secretary of defense who was vilified for carrying out the Vietnam War, then devoted himself to helping the world's poorest nations, died Monday. He was 93.

McNamara died at 5:30 a.m. at his home, his wife Diana told The Associated Press. She said he had been in failing health for some time.

For all his healing efforts, McNamara was fundamentally associated with the Vietnam War, "McNamara's war," the country's most disastrous foreign venture, the only American war to end in abject withdrawal rather than victory.

No disrespect for the late Mr. McNamara, but how does anything in McNamara's book vindicate Bill Clinton the draft dodger? McNamara was wrong about the war on many counts, including its "legitimacy", history has proved that the war was necessary and legitimate but poorly conducted and did accomplish some of its goals to slow or stop the spread of Communism around the globe, so whether Clinton thought the war was "wrong" or not, he DID dodge the draft, and his draft dodging is still a blight on his reputation. He can try to perfume it all he wants with screeds written by Leftists and losers claiming the war was illegitimate, but he will never cover the stench of his cowardice and treachery in lying and deceiving and benefitting from the abuse of power of a U.S. Senator to dodge the draft, and he will never be "vindicated".

I believe Clinton wasboasting about being vindicated because McNamara came out and said he felt the war was wrong all along.

Doesn't excuse him helping micromanage it and sending us there in the first place, if he actually ever thought that.

That I recall, his book wasn't well received in Veterans circles.

Well, there's one guy I won't miss. Robert Strange and LBJ led to the deaths of many of my friends with their political mishandeling of a war we should have won in under two years.
We should dig both of them up and kick them around the Vietnam Memorial every Veteran's Day as a gesture of our appreciation.

But that's just my opinion.
