Got an email today from Alabama Public Television promoting an upcoming PBS program in its "American Masters" series:
American Masters
Walter Cronkite: Witness To History
The promo (emphasis added):
Quote: | He hit the sands at Normandy and covered the trials at Nuremburg. He shed tears over JFK's assassination, took us to the moon, deemed Vietnam a stalemate and — steadfastly adhering to his credo of fast, accurate and unbiased news reporting — became the most trusted figure in American public life. |

Deemed Vietnam a stalemate? Most trusted figure in American public life?
I remember at the time Cronkite was actively broadcasting on CBS, a clear-eyed commentator noted that if Cronkite was such a god-like 'deemer', he should be brought to us as a public service, not requiring sponsors pitching Preparation H and wart removers.

I watched him on tv telling the American public that the VietCong had overrun us and whipped us and that the Administration was lying to us about the war because if they were telling the truth the Communists should not have been able to mount such a fierce offensive. I watched Walter Cronkite almost singlehandedly turn American opinion against the war over there.
And he was lying.
American Master? Master what? Master liar would get my vote.

Witness To History?
Or, manufacturer of history? The wrong history.
When will these hard care lefty's realize they did not stop Viet Nam? They prolonged it for 5 years at a cost of about another 40,000 American lives.
I was once discussing this with a lefty online, telling him of General Giaps considering negotiating a surrender after his utter defeat in Tet of 68 and seeing he could not win the battles. I mentioned the anti-war left and the North Vietnamese thanking them today.
His reply? Well, that's one mans opinion. |

I liked Walter CronKite when he was reporting on the space program.
As a teenager (17years) I was able to see through his Vietnam reporting.
I just ignored his bias because of my interest in the Moon venture.
I had friends serving in Vietnam at the time and was aware of the issues due to being on the High School debate team ( where I argued the current strategy.)
Different times. |

I wonder what he had to say after the German offensive during the Battle of the Bulge. I can see it now, "I'm afraid that this war is no longer winnable." |

What would you expect from Cronkite? He's a MSM icon. Of course he's going to be a super liberal. _________________ Swift Boats - Qui Nhon (12/69-4/70), Cat Lo (4/70-5/70), Vung Tau (5/70-12/71) |

the real tragedy is,
the number of people from the WW2 era,
who were stupid enough to believe this guy.
How can anybody be that dumb?
Dan Rather says the document was verified.
Ya sure, Dan |

That's an intentional typo in the heading for this thread, right Schadow?

I believed everything he said until I got to Viet Nam and personally found out he was manufacturing stories. We had no other point of reference like the internet provides today. I wrote about three letters to people complaining that there was absolutely no truth in what he reported about the area I was in. Maybe five or six people read those letters. When I got back from Viet Nam, I had people including retired military members tell me I was lying when I told them about the inaccuracies in his reporting. Most Americans including conservatives believed the MSM and just wanted out of Viet Nam at any cost by the time Nixon was in office. _________________ I was going to become an anarchist, but they had too many rules. |

The Internet is erasing the advantage guys like Cronkite and Rather had in their ability to influence the American public with half truths and outright fabrications under the guise of independent news reporting.
And just to think we owe it all to Al Gore. _________________ Left and Wrong are the opposite of Right! |

McNamera and Cronkite gone within 2 weeks. I think I'll have a cold beer and mourn their passing. The time it takes to drink the beer should be plenty.
How's Teddy doing? I might need another beer after that loss. |
