Mabus revokes imprisoned veteran's Silver Star
By Gidget Fuentes
gfuentes@militarytimes.com
(from July 18 Navy Times)

San Diego- In a highly unusual move, the Navy secretary has stripped a Silver Star awarded to a retired captain and Vietnam swift boat veteran who is serving a federal prison sentence after admitting to child pornography.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus revoked the Silver Star, the nation's third-highest valor award, which was awarded nearly 20 years ago to retired Capt. Wade Sanders of San Diego.

A spokeswoman for Mabus confirmed the secretary's decision, which he made in August 2010 following a review and recommendation by the Navy Department Board of Medals and Decorations. "Mabus signed a memorandum in which he revoked the previously awarded Silver Star," said Capt. Pamela Kunze.

"Had the subsequently determined facts and evidence surrounding both the incident for which the award was made and the processing of the award itself been known to the Secretary of the Navy in 1992, those facts would have prevented the award of the Silver Star," Kunze said.

Sanders, a former deputy assistant Navy secretary rose to prominence seven years ago as a swift boat veteran who supported the 2004 presidential candidacy of Sen. John Kerry, D.Mass.

Sanders in 2008 pleaded guilty to one count of possessing child pornography after an FBI investigation led to his San Diego home and the discovery of pornographic videos on his computers. He received a 37-month sentence as part of a plea deal; he has maintained he isn't a pedophile and was researching the subject for a book he planned to write.

It's not clear whether Sanders conviction played a role in him losing his Silver Star.

The Navy declined to release a copy of the memo, which Mabus addressed to the chief of naval personnel, who in turn would be responsible for the administrative actions to pull the award from official naval records.

Kunze would not say who or what prompted the review of Sanders Silver Star, nor would she say what new information had surfaced about the Silver Star.

"Additional information was brought to light after 1992," she said. "Those facts could have prevented the award of the Silver Star at that time."

She gave no specific reasons as to how Mabus or the board came to their conclusion.

The sole authority for revoking a medal rests with the service secretary, according to Chapter 2 of the Navy and Marine Corps Awards Manual.

Justice delayed but finally served. However, knowing the crooks running the current administration and their attitude toward the military, this might also be a back door way to try to rescind medals awarded to other Swiftvets, sorta like delayed payback to Kerry for torpedoing (pun intended) his run at POTUS...nothing is beneath these scum.

Do not believe that will happen. Sanders received upgraded his Silver Star in 92 under Clinton when Sanders was Assistant Sec of some one in the Navy. That was political to use his position to have his Bronze Star upgraded. Kerry's first PH would also come into play since his political orginization in 2004 admitted his first PH may have been self inflicted, they would just open the door and if someone received medals by lying or altering documents for awards, they should lose them the same way.

Rather remarkably (or perhaps not), it doesn't appear that this story will ever make it into the Navy Time's online edition.

Did anyone send Kerry a copy?

Anyone that engages in child pornography deserves to be stripped of everything, especially if it invokes honor and valor, as a Silver Star does.

In doing further research and talking with others involved. The Silver Star was rescinded last August and just now is being reported in the Navy Times which is dated 7/18/2011 but the print copy was delivered on the 12th. Statements which Wade stated were proven false and he could give not one witnesses to back his statements, nor remember any one involved. Seems like a lot of Democrats like to claim being war heroes and ask for Medals they do not deserve.

Some of the posters at Politico, and perhaps other blogs, are saying the story is fake because they can't find a link on the Navy Times site. Anyone know why they chose not to put it in their electronic copy?

I'd daresay the byline reporter has an e-mail box chock full of those inquiries. And lest we forget, Sanders was a featured contributor to Military.com (don't bother looking, they purged his very existence some time ago...internet archive might still have his stuff) which also owns the "Navy Times" online website. Now, who owns Military.com? Might be worth a look.

In the meantime...

"Newspaper: Kerry defender stripped of medal", By Glen Johnson, Globe Staff - Boston Globe

note: This is probably the same Glen Johnson who was 1 (ONE) of only 3 (THREE) people named as designated recipients of Kerry's military records. Someone should ask him a few pointed questions while we have his ear.

I am glad to see this man brought to justice. What is described in the sentencing memorandum is sickening. Thanks for letting us all know, Terry!

Looks like the "Marine Times" (why the "Marine Times" I haven't a clue) has now made the story available online...

Update: Now the "Navy Times" as well...

With the number of stories all over the Internet linking back to this SVPT topic thread, perhaps the Navy Times felt compelled to put up the electronic copy...being shamed into it is not most folks' idea of bold reporting, but at least they finally did the right thing.
