I have been having a discussion with some folks on another board about this 'controversy' and one of the comments/arguments proposes by another individual was this:

Quote:
How about Admiral Zumwalt, who said he “wanted to recommend Sen. Kerry for an even higher medal, the Navy Cross, but approval would have taken too long.”

and he cited this weblink:

http://www.s-t.com/daily/10-96/10-28-96/a03sr015.htm

I tried searching the archives, but I only saw tangentially related comments, nothing specific.

Can anyone provide the 'SwiftVet' rebuttal for this comment? I have also read that none of Kerrys superiors support Kerry on other links on this website, yet, obviously, Zumwalt was a superior and his comments conflict these statements.

Thanks for any illumination you can provide on this matter.

Interesting read. I'm surprised both you and the folks you are discussing this with missed a part of the article cited.

Quote:
Mr. Zumwalt also said he wanted to recommend Sen. Kerry for an even higher medal, the Navy Cross, but approval would have taken too long. Instead, he personally approved a Silver Star and sped along the award to improve morale at a time his sailors were taking heavy casualties.

At a time when morale is low and units are taking heavy casualties, it's not uncommon to try to build morale by awarding medals to some that may not even deserve what they got.

The very article you linked to shows that Zumwalts desire was not so much honoring Kerry, but raising morale within the unit.

Now, let me qualify this by saying that these are NOT MY criteria; however, since Adm. Zumwalt never served in Kerry's boat, how could he possibly have put him in for a higher medal? Laughing
