In the mid 60s I was serving aboard USS Clarion River (LSMR-409) which was capable of firing thousands of 5" rockets in a matter of minutes.
Since we were a flat bottom shallow draft vessel we frequently got very close to shore.
On many occasions the Swift boats would come out and we would give them ice cream! What a treat that must have been for them.
Now. about JFK. I think he is real scum. I was in Viet Nam when he was running the streets here behaving like a commie. I can't stand the bastard and agree he is not fit to be anywhere near the White House. |

Victor
Seems like I remember
Clairon River in drydock at Subic in the mid 60s. Itīs a ship,
but one wouldnīt be too far off to call her a boat.
With that flat bottom, Iīll bet you had some rough rides crossing
over to Vietnam. Those rockets had a limited range...
around 5 miles. You must have gotten
in close to provide support. Must have been
something at night tp see hundreds of rockets per minute.
The real question: Did Kerry show up for ice cream?

Oh man! I sure hope not. I defininetly remember firing a lot of support for the Marines with the 5"/38 and from several other ships including 16"/50s from a battleship although, I always the 409 was the most powerful ship in the US Navy. |

In 1968 I got some "Fire Support" from the Navy in the form of 16" projectiles from the BB New Jersey. All I can say is "Awesome"! They sounded like the Broad Street Subway when they came in overhead and the end result was a lot bigger than anything I ever saw dropped from a "Fast Mover". At the time I didn't have an FO and had to relay my fire request through the ANGLICO at Americal DIV. Hqs. (I was a Basic Branch FA officer commanding a Rifle Company. Because I had the Prefix "3" of Special Forces in front of my 1193 MOS the Division G-1 deemed I was "Qualified" to command a rifle company) The fire mission request started off with the caviat "Danger Close". Now I know why the Navy says that!
BTW, the BB NEW JERSEY is berthed about 8 miles from my house as a museum ship. |

At that time I was an FTG1 and I was in charge of forward main battery plot so I was part of the team that fired those rounds. |
