I have a question about how men were assigned to a boat:
Is it true that only a single crew (ie. five men) were assigned to work under a given OiC on a boat at any one time? Or was it common for people to come and go from a crew from day to day? I'm asking because of this whole Givens / Short issue, whereby it appears that Givens was most definitely on PCF-94 at a time when Short claims he was assigned. This wouldn't have been possible unless someone was missing to make room for Givens, or unless Givens was riding along in excess of the normal crew.
Thanks for any replies... |

I believe I saw Givens casuality report and seem to rember as being classified as (in training). I think this was in Kerrys Action report of 27 Feb. |

That's correct. Givens is listed as a trainee. His rate was EN2, if I recall (Engineman).
The standard crew complement was five enlisted and one commissioned officer. The standard rates were Radarman, Engineman, Gunners Mate, Quartermaster and Boatswains Mate.
Swift boats often carried extra passengers - SEALs, MSF troops, etc. and dropped them off at various points to pursue the enemy (and then picked them up again, of course.) _________________ antimedia
