From Jim Geraghty
Looking at Kerry‘s response, as reported by The Washington Post:
"This group isn't interested in the truth — and they're not telling the truth.”
Well, one of their charges is that you lied about events to get your medals. Calling them liars doesn’t clear this up much. Generating other corroborating evidence would help your case.
“They didn't even exist until I won the nomination for president.”
I’m not sure how the timing of their formation is reflective of the accuracy of their charges.
“They're funded by hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Republican contributor out of Texas.”
Indeed, this is the one fact that has come through loud and clear in most of the mainstream media’s coverage.
“They're a front for the Bush campaign.”
Wait, that’s a big charge to make. Put up or shut up. Show us collusion, cooperation, or coordination between the Swift Boat Vets and the Bush campaign and/or the RNC.
“And the fact that the president won't denounce what they're up to tells you everything you need to know — he wants them to do his dirty work.”
Well, President Bush has said he doesn’t want any soft money ads in this race, something you haven’t done, senator. One might think you want MoveOn.org, the Media Fund, and those other groups making ads comparing Bush to Hitler to do your dirty work. Furthermore, could the President denounce these ads? If the Swift Boat Vets, a 527 group, stopped running the ads because the president said so, wouldn’t that be collusion, cooperation, or coordination between the two groups? Bush can’t order this independent group to stop running the ad - it would violate McCain Feingold campaign finance reform.
"Of course, the president keeps telling people he would never question my service to our country," Kerry said to loud cheers from the audience. "Instead, he watches as a Republican-funded attack group does just that. Well, if he wants to have a debate about our service in Vietnam, here is my answer: 'Bring it on.' "
Actually, Senator, your running mate said the best way to know what kind of a man you are is to spend five minutes with the men who served with you. So the Swift Boat Vets are just helping the country know what they thought of you.
Wrong move. Wrong, wrong move. The way to refute these guys was to go on Tim Russert, or Forrest Sawyer, or George Stephanopolous and George Will, or some other top-level tough interviewer, release every form in the Navy archives, and lay everything on the table. Kerry ought to come out and say he understands why some of these man hate him. He said the war they bled in wasn’t worth fighting, a hard message to hear. Kerry should say that if he were in their shoes, he might hate a war protestor too. But we can’t let our present positions interfere with our memories of the past, and the evidence to support Kerry’s wartime accounts is… X, Y, and Z.
Of course, this assumes X, Y, and Z. And I guess this strategy doesn’t work if Kerry really is the cretin that “Unfit for Command” portrays him, and much of his wartime exploits are exaggerated, and his entire war hero reputation is a house of cards.
Anyway, today’s statement didn’t close this issue. |

As far as I'm concerned, Kerry's statement today just make him more like a raving lunatic.
Maybe he studied Howard Dean? _________________ Clark County Conservative |
