Do Kerry's political advisors have any sort of clue? Calling on a book ban is just going to make the average uninformed person out there wonder what John is so afraid of.
I bet sales of the book and demand for it jump if this call for a ban is true.
Oh, and it is no wonder that Kerry is trying to hide books from the rest of us--apparently copies of his book "The New Soldier" mysteriously began disappearing after he got into politics.
What is in these two books that Kerry and his friends don't want the rest of us to see? |

GOOD! SBVT got the oh so Sensitive, Nuanced and Progressive East Coast Liberal Democratic Party Presidential Candidate to call for the suppression of FREE SPEECH! Sorry buddy this isn't your workers paradise of Vietnam.
This just LOUDLY demonstrates that Kerry is too arrogant and is such an egomaniac he thinks he can crap on the US Constitution when it suits him. He cannot be trusted with our Nation and its Armed Forces.
The loon is imploding. _________________ Iraqi Freedom 2003-2004. We won't take any of that 1960s crap when We come home!

You know, usually when there is a call for a certain book to be banned, in the US, it tends to just make people more curious and try to seek out a copy of the book to see what the fuss is all about. And in any case, the book is already in purchasers' possession or will soon be via mail, fedex, and so forth, as I write this. They really should have been on the ball months before . . . the horse is already out of the barn and about 100 miles away. |

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
So who are the "Brown Shirts"? They can Sue but they cannot ban.
Enough said

Oh well
We'll just have to go underground and meet secretly
to have "Unfit for Command" readings by candlelight.
FYI. after a long wait I got my copy from Amazon.
but I became impatient and ordered another just 2 days ago
from booksamillion.com it shipped in 2 days.
I'll donate that one to a VA hospital . |

Here is the story from Salon.com:
Quote: | Unfit for bookstores
The Kerry campaign calls on a conservative publisher to withdraw book after the Washington Post torpedoes the veracity of a Swift boat veteran.

By Eric Boehlert
Aug. 19, 2004 | The Kerry campaign has told Salon that the publisher of "Unfit for Command," the book that is at the center of the attack on Kerry's military record by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, is retailing a hoax and should consider withdrawing it from bookstores. "No publisher should want to be selling books with proven falsehoods in them, especially falsehoods that are meant to smear the military service of an American veteran," said Kerry campaign spokesman Chad Clanton. "If I were them, I'd be ducking under my desk wondering what to do. This is a serious problem."
Even some uncomfortable Republicans might breathe a sigh a relief if "Unfit for Command" were to vanish from bookstores: "I don't think the Swift Boat Veterans are helping the Republican cause," Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., remarked on CNN Thursday.
Yanking the title may seem unlikely given the fact that Regnery Publishing, the conservative shop that is home to fire-breathing right-wing partisans like Ann Coulter and David Limbaugh, is behind the book. Thanks to the big-spending campaign of the Republican veterans group, which is bankrolled by major Bush contributors, the book has already hit bestseller lists and is sure to turn a big profit.
But there is a long-standing tradition by reputable publishers of withdrawing titles that prove to be hoaxes or frauds. Just last month Random House's Australian unit was forced to pull an international bestseller after it was determined to be a fabrication. The book, "Forbidden Love," allegedly detailed the death of a Jordanian woman, murdered by her Muslim father after he discovered she was seeing a Christian man. After questions were raised, an internal investigation by Random House concluded the book was a fraud.
"Unfit for Command" and the veterans group behind it are facing similar questions Thursday after the Washington Post torpedoed the veracity of one of its key members. Larry Thurlow, who commanded a Navy Swift boat alongside Kerry in Vietnam, has insisted Kerry lied about the circumstances surrounding his Bronze Star award, claiming Kerry's boat never came under enemy fire on March 13, 1969, the day an injured Kerry leaned overboard to scoop wounded Green Beret Larry Rassmann out of the river. But contrary to Thurlow's claim, the Washington Post has reported today that according to his own military files, which recorded the events of March 13, 1969, "enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire" were directed at "all units" of the five-boat flotilla, including Kerry's.
Earlier, Retired Adm. Roy Hoffmann, chairman and co-founder of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, flip-flopped on a key element of his Kerry story. In May, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, "Hoffmann acknowledged he had no first-hand knowledge to discredit Kerry's claims to valor and said that although Kerry was under his command, he really didn't know Kerry much personally." But with the pending publication of "Unfit for Command," Hoffmann changed his story, insisting he "knew [Kerry] well."
Hoffmann wasn't alone in reversing his story on the Kerry attack. In 1968, Grant Hibbard, a lieutenant commander in Vietnam during Kerry's tour, described Kerry favorably: "One of the top few in his willingness to seek and accept responsibility." But now he claims Kerry lied about his service. Another vocal Kerry critic, Capt. George Elliot, who served in Vietnam at the same time Kerry did, praised Kerry both in a 1968 evaluation ("In a combat environment often requiring independent, decisive action, Lieutenant Junior Grade Kerry was unsurpassed") and as recently as 1996 when Elliot publicly praised Kerry for charging after the enemy.
A Regnery Publishing spokesperson did not return a call seeking comment about the factual cloud over "Unfit for Command." But if Regnery doesn't withdraw the book, perhaps bookstore retailers will at least consider moving the title over to the fiction section.

I just called two local book stores here in San Antonio, Barnes and Noble and Borders. They both are sold out and say the demand is huge and have a waiting list. They will only hold the book for 24 hours for you when it finally comes in and they are expecting it to take 2 weeks. One guy at Borders said the publisher did not expect this huge demand and did not print enough. Now that the Dems want it banned the printers better crank out a few million to meet demand. _________________ Proud to serve! No medals required! |

What I do not understand is who made the call in the kerry campaign to acknowledge the book, first of all... then who made the call to act like trolls on a web talk board and spin the issue completely away from the topic of the book into an attack on the book itself?
That has got to be one lunatic fringe member who rose to a position of power long before their brain evolved.
The problem with republicans though is they have a tendency to be courteous and not lash out at such obvious moves of desperation. They wait for the people to make up their own minds and take the 'high ground' by not stooping to responding.
THE POINT IS: a good response is NOT A RESPONSE it is an ATTACK.
In this instance the Republicans should be out on the circuit NOW attacking Kerry himself, not the campaign, for attempting to restrict free speech, for making allegations against a printed book, for embracing Michael Moore, Krugman and the rest then demanding others be unable to speak at all, let alone be heard.
But then again, this is not a political site.
Just remember, Swiftees.... we are with you every step of this process and the more kerry changes the topic the more scared he is.
By the time he has the press reporting on what brand of underware O'Neill is wearing it will have been far past the issue enough for even the slowest to pick up on. |

iggit,
We are a political site in that we are attempting to educate the public for the election (i.e. don't vote for Kerry). However, we are not a partisan site.
I don't think that the Kerry camp or the DNC understand it....and it's killing them.
In addiiton to that, this was a stupid, stupid thing to do.
1. It gets the ACLU on our side. Sure they are moonbat liberals, but they are consistant moonbat liberals (they even defended Rush Limbaugh). Kerry doesn't want to piss off the ACLU.
2. It gives the book instant mainstream credibility. Normally political books only appeal to the converted. Asking for a ban changes all that.
How did this man ever make it this far in politics?! _________________ -Polaris
