Mark Shields defends Kerry's 1971 slander against the U.S. military by saying Kerry was only repeating the slanders of the "Winter Soldiers" in Detroit to the U.S. Congress.
It's gotten so bad for the Kerry campaign that his defenders are resorting to defending him on the basis of his only "repeating" unsubstantiated allegations of mass murder and atrocities to Congress, his not having served with the soldiers in question and thereby having no direct evidence personally.
John Kerry was only repeating vicious slander to the world; he didn't make it up himself!
Try using that defense in a defamation case.

MARK SHIELDS: Bill, let's be very blunt about it, this whole thing. That ad is a fraud.
WILLIAM KRISTOL: This new ad?
MARK SHIELDS: The new ad. John Kerry is... what they did is John Kerry is saying in the testimony, if you go back and read the testimony, John Kerry is saying "this was what was testified at by the winter soldiers in Detroit. This is their testimony. This is what they said." And what they simply dropped out was "this is what they said."
WILLIAM KRISTOL: He utterly associates himself with that.
MARK SHIELDS: No, no, he said "this is what they testified. This is what 150 American soldiers testified to in Detroit." And that's what he's testified; that's what he said. |

So now he's saying that Kerry was gullible and swallowed these slanders whole without using his intellectual brain to investigate these slanders? |

Kerry never backed away from the Testimony he provided in the Senate until now. Man the spin from their Campaign is unreal!
He stated under oath that these things did occur in Vietnam, and it was his "War Hero" status that gave credibility to what he was Testifying to. It doesn't matter that it was all a bunch of BS to begin with or that it was based on the words of a bunche of Posers, Kerry stated he saw these things happen!!
That type of "Defense" is just another indicator of his lack of Leadership and ability to be a Leader. If he is a person who will just repeat the words of others without verifying their veracity, then he has no integrity does he? Especially on such matters as War Crimes and Defemation of his Brothers still fighting in Vietnam!! _________________ U.S. Army 1983-1995, 11C1P/11H2P NBTDT |

Associates himself, exactly! That was my mission this am in sending emails out to shows -- here's the text, and I attached that flyer that is on the board here somewhere (VVAW):
Re: new SBVFT ad: Kerry’s people are saying the Swiftees took JK’s words out of context and that he was NOT speaking for himself but only referring to others in those bytes in the ad. I’m sure there are many places one could find JK speaking for “thousands of veterans” or generally “American soldiers” -- here’s one example, clips of the text from the flyer passed out from his anti-war protest group back then showing generalized condemnation of ALL US SOLDIERS (copy of flyer follows text):
“A U.S. INFANTRY COMPANY JUST CAME THROUGH HERE
If you had been Vietnamese---
We might have burned your house, we might have shot your dog,
We might have shot you, we might have raped your wife and daughter,
…. we might have done ALL these things to you and your whole TOWN
… If it doesn’t bother you that American soldiers do these things everyday to the Vietnamese simply because they are “Gooks”, then picture YOURSELF as one of the silent VICTIMS.
HELP US TO END THE WAR BEFORE THEY TURN YOUR SON INTO A BUTCHER or a corpse.”
Now maybe I'm wrong -- but I believe this is from a general flyer handed out at protests, I can't prove it. Note that there is no mention of any specific vets, but rather, it refers to "American soldiers." ASSOCIATION WITH -- I suppose JK would say, well, yes I marched and organized with these people, and yes, they handed this flyer out -- but they are the ones that handed it out, not me." This is a man who has a way with words... He's gotta GO! |

Not only does it prove him a parrot, not a leader, but I believe that someone who republishes (via print or talk) defamatory material is as liable for defamation as the originator.

i watched this exchange. I've never seen Shields so desperate...
he was sweating .... and throwing out ridiculous statements.
Bill Kristol has changed his tune from last Sunday, when on FOX News
Sunday he kinda poo-pood the Swifties. But he has since read the book
Unfit for Command. i believe he is firmly for the Swifties on this now,
and he was cool as a cucumber... chuckling at Shields' hysterics.
it went great for the Swifties in my opinion.

That is *exactly* what he would say.

But Kerry said that he burned down villages poisoned food supplies and killed all the livestock and shot everything that moved in a free fire zone. He didn't hear that from anyone else.He did it himself. |

He gets around that by condemning the gov't as having forced him, by US policy, to do so. Is there ANY action on this guy's part that he did by way of his OWN decision??? |

Well most of the time he was the high ranking person on his boat. And I believe he was taught in officers training that he doesn't have to follow an illegal order. |

AYE! that's the rub!
There is a certain amount of decision-making involved that rests within the ethical decisions of the soldier, even within a "free fire zone" situation. Kerry speaks of search and destroy and free fire zones in the context that he was just a robot that shot in a crazed fashion without a thought in his head, without humanity, and without the power to make the right and honorable choice in taking action. Again, and again, he refuses to take any responsibility for his actions. Someone, or something, made me do it! And if I did it, EVERYONE ELSE must have too. |

it's great to know that Kerry decided to just regurgitate 2nd hand stories as if they were his own in front of congress. If Kerry wasn't claiming to have seen those events... why would he be brought before congress? Is Kerry guilty of perjury now? |

The Democrats have held strongly that no one knows anything for sure unless they were ON THE SAME BOAT! Ergo, Kerry's allegations of rape, murder, cutting off ears, etc., apply only to those who were ON THE SAME BOAT! I guess that limits the acrocities to Kerry, Barker, Rassman, Sanders, Short, Wasser, Zaldonis, some guy whose name starts with "A" and only one or two real Swiftees. Mark Shields is one of the most partisian so-called journalists in
the MSM. Everytime I watch the segment in which he appears
every Friday on PBS or when I watch "The Capitol Gang", I ask
myself why I am putting myself through the frustration of listening
to his mindless babble. I was rather proud of Bill Crystal (who can
be very critical of the current administration at times and whom I
suspect is not much of a fan of either Bush '41 or Bush '43). He did
not let Mark Shields get away with putting out the Dems talking
points as he usually does. I like David Brooks, but he is too nice to
go up against someone like Shields who does not mind directly
contradicting what any well-informed viewer knows to be the truth.
He really has no shame. BTW, Margaret Carlson and Al Hunt who
regularly appear on "The Capitol Gang" fall into that category too,
but even they have surprised me recently as they attempt to defend
the indefensable (Kerry). _________________ Susan R. Morton |

I simply don’t’ think it makes much difference as to whose recollections he was testifying to at those hearings.
Just as it makes little difference if it was “technically” his ribbons that were thrown with contempt back into the face of a grateful nation.
The only thing that matters is that he willingly took the leadership role in such a damning anti-America spectacle.
At those hearings, he was the one saying the words that gave North Vietnam the credibility they needed to “prove” to the world that America was committing war crimes and thereby justify their own heinous treatment of our people.
John Kerry was the man who willing took center stage to do this and this speaks volumes about the man’s character.
Since this is the theme of the new ad, I think it would be a mistake to waste any time arguing about whether Kerry was only repeating what others told him. I think it would be much better to concede such a small point and get the debate focused on the fact that John Kerry was the man who willingly gave the lying testimony.
To me anyway, this is the point that addresses the man’s lack of character.
As usual, these are just my thoughts. |
