The question I have, which may bear on Kerry's assertion that he was in Cambodia, is how far upriver did a Swiftboat go? Considering the boat had exposed props, a 5'+ draft and is 50' long, could a Swift boat have been able to go upriver to Cambodia? I would guess that given the size of a Swift, that their main mission would be to control the lower rivers and deltas, and leave upriver patrols to smaller boats like the PBR. I'm comfortable with small boats, but I profess total ignorance of the geography of SE asia, especially concerning how navigable the rivers are over there.

Swifts went in to canals that were shallow enough you could walk in them.

Was there a minimum width for the waterways they would travel? I would guess that Swifts wouldn't travel on rivers that were narrower than their ability to reverse course. In deltas that wouldn't be as big an issue(since they still empty into the sea and open water), but upriver, into tributaries, that would still be an issue, right?

Go to www.pcf45.com and look around. Swifts were often in Dhongs ( canals) where it was impossible to reverse course without putting half the boat on the beach.
