I found this succinct article at the Burlington Free Press. Thanks to the writer. As you can see it appears that Kerry wants to try to undo the damage he did in 1971. I think not.

America's reputation
John Kerry talks about restoring America's reputation around the world, which is ironic considering that he was instrumental in giving this country its bad reputation in the first place when he publicly stated supposed atrocities committed by our troops in Vietnam. He claimed to have witnessed our troops raping victims, cutting off the limbs and genitals of victims, setting fire to villages, and bayoneting infants. He went so far as to compare our troops to Ghengis Khan. The claims he made were later used by the enemy against us at the Paris Peace Talks and reported by news agencies around the world. Atrocities he now says were told to him by soldiers he never bothered to verify or get depositions from, and other atrocities which he claims to have exaggerated due to the exuberance of youth.
But not only did John Kerry destroy America's reputation around the world, he also destroyed thousands of returning Vietnam veterans' lives. Returning vets were mistreated, spit on, denied jobs and opportunities and labeled murderers and baby killers by other Americans who either had their own political agenda or were uninformed enough to believe Kerry. No one could ever repair the damage caused to this country's reputation by the opportunistic, politically motivated John Kerry.
In this difficult time, I feel it necessary to set the record straight so that people can make an informed decision when considering this dishonorable man to the most honorable of public offices.
