Another U S Army viewpoint. One of my Signal Battalions was located on the mountain above Vung Tau. During my last tour (1968-1969), I held my Sergeants Major conferences at that location. On at least two occasions we, a group of about six, spent a night on one of the boats. I never heard anyone mention this "hot-shot" who claims to have won the war by himself. My local SGM was in contact almost daily with the Swift crews and the small detachment which navigated for the ships approaching to go up the river to Saigon. We spoke severeal times a week and he never said anything about this "hero". I was never wounded, awarded a Purple Heart or any word for valor, but after 26 plus years, I think I know what it takes to receive the awards kery claims. My real problem is with the minority of sailors who can't seem to say enough good things about "poor little rich man". Thanks for listening. BigGuy32 |
