And let us not forget that about this time in EVERY Presidential campaign, one of the candidates says "We need to stop the negative campaigning. I call on my opponent to stop. I'll wait. ONE -- TWO -- THREE. Told you he wouldn't stop. Now on with the show!"

The President made one of those non-statement statements that the Democrats are so good at making (e.g., "John Kerry and John Edwards will cut family [health care] premiums by up to $1,000." http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/health_care/) That would include $1. A completely content free statement that sounds good at first glance.

And now on with the show!

Everyone RELAX!

This is awesome news for us. President Bush has clearly stated that he wants all 527 ads to stop. That gives him credibility as a leader; compassion towards a battered opponent; and it costs him nothing.

Furthermore, he has in one fell swoop neatly spiked the guns of the Kerry campaign. They can no longer claim that we are associated with the GOP in any way. After all, they asked us to stop. We refuse. No coordination.

I will say this having lived in Texas for some time. President Bush is a quite a smart fellow. You underestimate him politically at your peril.

Maybe this is slightly off-topic, but if Kerry/Edwards say that they will decrease health-care premiums by a certain amount of money, since they want to use government $$$ to do it, your taxes will go up twice as much!

Bush knows damn well that you Swifties aren't going to stop. He just wants to make it clear that he has not sanctioned your activity while at the same time turning up the heat on the MoveOn.org dirtbags and their ilk. Brilliant move actually.

Bush had to say that. It's the politically correct thing to do. You can bet, however, under his breath he's saying "Go SwiftVets Go Go Go"
Sometimes I don't like what has to be done politically. It's time for John O'Neill to say point blank that this group has NO INTENTIONS whatsoever of stopping. As a matter of fact, we're just getting started.

There is also a lot of tit-for-tat going on here.

Bush would love nothing better than for this to be a battle between Kerry and his fellow verterans. Kerry, in trying to change that dynamic, is desperately trying to bring Bush down in the mud with him. Bush is saying, "I don't think so, Popeye".

This is the time for a nice, polite press release in the form of a letter to President Bush. It should state while the SBVT respect him as Commander in Chief, this is an issue between this group and John Kerry and will continue to be one. Also highlight an understanding that Kerry and his supporters have attacked Bush relentlessly with 527s, but this is about truth and not about politics. Then mass email and fax it to Drudge, the MSM, and all the blogs.

Thanks Jack;

This is one of the better suggestions that I have seen.

Bush played it correctly IMHO...
He understands the passion of the SBVT and that they will be relentless to the end.
Both candidates can see the impact this is having with the public - Kerry is frazzled, Bush, no doubt, elated.
The president's statement, however, is one similar to a parent scolding children: "You be nice to each other", when the parent knows darn well that there's gonna be someone crying real soon...

Grab a Kleenex, Mr. Kerry.

Bush's comments were misconstrued to nip the truth in the bud. Kerry's liberal lackeys in the media took Bush's hint of criticism and turned it into a death sentence for the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth story. Bush is a fool for caving in even a little with Kerry and his arrogant lot because the media is part of this treacherous party...

My home town newspaper got it right. The following headline and story summary introduced an associated Press article by Pete Yost

Bush urges end to attack ads by outside groups

In Texas, Bush said, “I don’t think we ought to have 527s,” a reference to the outside groups that have poured millions of dollars over the past year into attack ads. Bush himself has been the main target of ads costing some $60 million. Bush said all of the ads should be stopped.
