Jim Rassman was awarded a Purple Heart for the 3/16/69 combat. The award reference is 5thSFGA GO 350 Dated 3/21/69 for action dated 3/13/69. I do not know how that is possible since 7.(C) of the after action report lists 6 US including Kerry and 1 VNMSF (Mung SF) who was KIA earlier in the day. All of the folks on the list went to the USCGC Spencer for treatment with the serious wounded (4 members) Medevaced. My question is how did Rassman get a Purple Heart? Did Kerry and Rassman cross recommend each other. Some one HELP!!!

ord33,

The command logs I pulled from the Kerry site agree with you. There is no record of Rasmann being wounded in that command report.

I smell a FOIA request here.

somewhere out in wwwland there was an article mentioning a conversation from the day before the event. Something about "smelling medals in the air"
Rassman and kerry were freinds off the boat, iirc.

He is not named in the Navy casualty reports for the action. Check the Special Forces sites to see what thery're saying.

There are no records as far as we can determine. Belodeau was the witness and it was signed by George Elliot. I've been told there's not reference to Rassman in it at all.

This unconfirmed information on Rassmann getting a Purple Heart for the 3/13/69 engagement certainly could be very important. Has anyone seen any documentation on this?

In all of my reading on the March 13th incident, I do not recall seeing any reference to Rassmann being injured. Wonder where it happened... Hmm? Anyone know how injuries to the troops embarked would be reported up the chain of command?

Someone with a good knack for writing, please send a nice letter to Brit Hume at Fox News, or one of the other more interested press people with this information and questions. This appears to be something worth investigating and they would have the means and staff to do the FOI request quickly.

Does anyone also think a bump of this question to Drudge would help?

I think you better find a link to the original rumor before you waste Brit's time.
