There were once three grenades...
Grenade #1 fell off the web gear of a FNG getting off a helicopter in Vietnam. An Army captain, Max Cleland, mistakenly thinking it was his, reached down to pick it up. It exploded, with disasterous results for Cleland. His entire body was peppered with fragments and he lost both legs and one arm.
Grenade #2 was incompetently fired from a M-79 launcher at too short a range, exploded on some rocks, and a piece of the grenade casing came back and nicked the firer, John Kerry. There had been no hostile fire. Treatment for the wound consisted of a bandaid and bacitracin ointment.
Grenade #3 was tossed by someone (either Kerry or a Nung mercenary working for the US, depending on which Kerry story you want to believe) into a VC rice cache. It exploded and a piece of the casing came back and nicked the buttocks of John Kerry. There was no hostile fire at the time. No treatment for the buttocks wound, if any, is reported.
These three grenade incidents resulted in the award of two Purple Hearts.
Both went to John Kerry.
Regards,
TSB

Allow me, the topical spray applied to Kerry to treat his most horrific wound was not bacitracin; it was Bactine, I sprayed some on my 10 year old's mosquito bite his evening... |
