No, they cannot shut them down. Free Speech protects all 527's. Bush will just give a half-hearted plea. He knows because of the SBVT Kerry has dropped 3% in a Poll from the LA. Times.

527's will not go away. I was workking on the begining stages of a 527 dot com group before ever discovering swiftvets.com. The company who is going to host it for me called and I told them to call me back after the elections because I wanted to get involved with swiftvets.com.

I went ahead and bought rights for the domain name. The site does not exist, but hopefully it will in the future. The name will be........

I think that 527's give voices to america that dont otherwise have one.

Although it is a double edge sword. Billionaires can sometimes have an unfair advantage. But that is the beauty of grass roots. Just look at the swiftees.

The whole 527 problem is a Kerry / DNC problem.

As I understand it 527s cannot speak in favor of a candidate. They interpreted that to mean spew false accusations and hatred.

They don't seem to know how to deal with it.
They should have watched how the Bush camp handled their barrage throughout the Spring campaign.

The successful 527 ( SBVT ) organizes around an issue demanding the TRUTH by challanging those spreading LIES and delivering the FACTS.

McCain still needs to retract his unfounded "dishonest and dishonorable" statement.
He may be too conflicted at this point though.

Kerry needs to sign the 180.

A significant difference I think is essential to point out is that while Bush is denouncing the 527's and their ads, he is doing it across the board and isn't just picking to denounce the ones he doesn't like.

I still don't agree with it because of first amendment issues, but if a politician is going to try it, they better be consistent and treat them all equally.

I kinda like 527's ... especially this one.

Most of these are 'selective issue' oriented, which means their success or failure primarily depends on how many people across the country care about the 527's issue.

The next thing I'd like to see is the aboliton of the "two-party system" ... just have one big "unaffiliated primary", and let the 527 skewering begin. In September, all voters (since there would no longer be any parties) would get to choose ... say ... 3 candidates.

Then, we elect one in November, and call it good.

As I said in the other thread....RELAX! This is a win/win for the president. Most of our donations (as I understand it) are small donations so at this point being limited to hard money really wouldn't hurt us at this point...and I suspect that Bush knows it. More to the point, Kerry has given Bush a moral imperitive to completely gut Kerry's source of soft-money.

Basically Kerry shot himself in th foot and created a lose-lose situation for Kerry.

It doesn't matter what Bush tries to do, or how it makes him look to the public. He is not the issue, nor is his re-election the issue. The issue, as John O, has said repeatedly, is John Kerry's lies, and how these make him un-fit for command. I'm against Kerry a whole lot more than I'm for Bush.
