Served a year with River Patrol Flotilla 5 in Binh Thuy (Oct. 69 - Oct. 70).
Some time with Riv Div 535, some time as Commadore Falk's aide. Some time running canals in his whaler. Was in Cambodia when Nixon said we could be there in '70.

Returned for second tour on the Ocean Going Minesweeper, USS Gallant.

Spent the last 2 years of my time on MSO's out of Long Beach, CA.

I SPENT MY TOUR OF DUTY IN OAKLAND, CALIF. (TREASURE ISLAND), I WAS JUST A YOUNG SMARTASS KINDA KID..SO I ENLISTED IN THE MARINE CORPS..THEY KEPT ME IN ADMIN. I DIDNT KNOW WHAT THE WAR WAS ABOUT, I GREW UP ON THE POOR SIDE OF TOWN BUT RAISED WITH AN AMERICAN SPRIT..IT WAS A REAL WAKE UP CALL FOR ME AT THE AGE OF 19 LIKE MOST OF MY FRIENDS..

OAKLAND, WAS WERE ALL THE DEAD MARINES WENT FOR PROCESSING FROM WESTPAC (VIET NAM)..VERY BIG FACILITY..

THE LAST 6 MONTHS OF DUTY THEY PUT ME ON ESCORT DUTY...WHICH IS ESCORTING THE BODY FROM OAKLAND TO THIER HOME STATES..WOW..IT ALWAYS BOTHER ME, CAUSE I WAS TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT IT WAS THE RIGHT BODY WHEN I GOT TO THIER HOME STATE..GOD, I STILL SEE THESE GUYS, MY AGE, GONE, BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE DOING WHAT WAS RIGHT AT THE TIME..THE FAMILYS TREATED ME LIKE GOLD, AND I ALWAYS FELT GUILTY FOR THAT..I DIDNT DESERVE ANYTHING...BUT IT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER..CAUSE I STILL SEE THOSE FAMILYS, THE FUNERALS..AND THINK HOW LUCKIE WE ALL ARE..
WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE MARINES TO GO BACK TO IOWA, BEFORE THE FLIGHT I GOT RID OF THE UNIFORM, BECAUSE GROUPS IN AIRPORTS OR WHERE EVER WOULD START CALLING US NAMES...AS IF MY SHORT HAIRCUT DIDNT GIVE ME AWAY...AND IT WAS YEARS AND YEARS BEFORE I COULD ADMIT I WAS AN EX MARINE IN A BAD TIME...
HOWEVER, I DO KNOW THIS, IF CRIMES WERE COMMITED IN VIET NAM I BELIEVE IT WAS DONE MORE OUT OF FEAR..AND FOR JOHN KERRY TO PROTEST THE WAR LIKE HE DID JUST ADDED FUEL TO THE FIRE...I DONT LIKE POLITICS BECAUSE OF ALL THIS..NO ONE WAS INTERESTED IN VIET NAM BEFORE JOHN KERRY ENTERED THE RACE...SAD....SOME OF THE FAMILYS OF THE MARINES I ESCORTED HOME STILL SEND CHRISTMAS CARDS...

Joined USN Apr. 1963. Signed up for 6 yrs. wanting to be underwater in one of them big boats.
Released from active duty Oct. 1963 on a hardship discharge when my mother was dying leaving Pop with 3 more younguns. Still don't know how he got them to send me home and work but he did. Didn't even get to finish Fire Control Tech School in Bainbridge, Md.
I and all Americans are in deep dept to all you guys. Except Kerry. I think he negated all his good deeds when he came back. I've always been po'd at the way he trashed the US so when he came out as a candidate for president I couldn't believe the gall the man has. How can one be so stupid or full of blind ambition as to not know or understand the deep resentment he had engendered in thousands of his peers.
Well, this is poetic justice if I ever saw it. Good going guys, from my memory Senator Kerry needs to be in Leavenworth serving time for high treason not sitting in 1600 Pa. Ave being President of the same country he so eloquently trashed all those many yrs. ago

I am a 24 year retired vet having served in the Army and Air Force. I spent time in Nam back in '66-'67. Like so many others who were there, I have always been pretty quiet about my experiences there, and was one of those subjected to the nasty treatment upon return to the CONUS by those who thought we GI's were at fault for the war.
I am now an elected official and totally disagree with Kerry's about face regarding his military service. Irrespective of his military service - such as that be - what does that have to do with today and with the issues that need to be faced by all elected officials in this day and age.
You folks keep up the good work. And I am spreading the word about your website so that people can learn the truth about this "wannabe".

I enlisted in the USMC in 1969, and was in 'Nam in 69-70, grunt marine. My hitch ws four years. I only did one tour in Viet Nam, I didn't want to push my luck. I've currently been diagnosed with PTSD by the VA at 70% disability rating. I've been fighting the war for 30plus years in my head and still am.

From the time I joined the service till the time I retired I fixed broken things I was told to fix. My job was to make sure the tax payer got their moneys worth and to follow the orders of my commander in chief and the offices appointed above me.I did the best to comply and fulfil the orders I was given. I also had the opportunity to watch several men blantantly draft and sex up reports in order to qualify for awards and medals. You could sometimes see men gather around manuals and posters reviewing ribbons and checking them to see if they qualified for points for advancement. Those same men would often come to me in the middle of the night and ask me if not try to order me to repair a peice of equipment they were suppose to be qualified to operate and/or repair. I'm not saying everyone lacked moral fiber to accept their responsibility but even one or two at each station was more than I felt we needed.
I never saw a medal fix a peice of equipment, stop a bullet, launch a rocket or missle, fire a rifle or pistol, throw a gernade or launch one, keep maintenance recordors or provide the required repair parts and materials to keep the tools of a warriors trade at optimum operation. No medal or ribbon has every delivered victory in the heat of battle or delivered an injured commrade to a meddical station or provided immediate medical treatment to save a fellow warrior.
Who among you in this forum owe their rights and freedom to a medal or some sleepwalker who either lied at enlisment or fake the problem to draw attention to himself or get out of combat duty or someother imoral agenda.
Throughout my military career I had the oportunity to work with every branch of service and the DEA at one time or the other. I enjoyed it and am pround of my service to my country and would have served for thirty if Bill Clinton had not had other ideas about the military.

Guess I was AWOL since I didn't report for duty... Smile

My name is David Lambert, was in the Army '72-'75.
MOS: 32D20 Telecom

Upon enlistment, I was grabbed by the ASA for SIGINT purposes. Graduated from FT. Monmouth NJ and had orders for Quang Tri, 8th RRFS in Sept 72. But, when I got in-country, the 8th was overrun and wasn't 'there' anymore. Was transferred to the 7th RRFS in Ramasan, Thailand...
Was disappointed at the time, since I volunteered for duty in 'Nam. Found out I had a guardian angel...met some guys from the 8th. I would probably be on that Wall (never been) now, if not for my transfer. We didn't ever see any real action with the exception of a few scary times of abject fear (you know the deal, boredom, boredom...bang! ALERT!) and we had to hit the bunkers with M16 in hand. We killed a lot of trees... Wink

Evidently we had the 'Thai Cong' out there. I had never heard of this variety of enemy until I got there. Thank God I never got to meet one up close, but then, maybe I did, in bars and Brothels?.... Wink

Spent 30 years hating Kerry for what I experienced when I got home, with no outlets. Have never discussed it with anyone. Now there is a place to talk. I have no desire to discuss it with anyone that hasn't 'been there and done that'. God was looking out for me then, and since, I should have been killed at least 3 times, but, I just didn't. Who knows why, not me. I'm firmly convinced, when it's your time, it's your time, and not until.

All I remember of those days WAS buried deeply (getting spit on will do that to you), until this UnHero Kerry drudged it all back up. I've never told any war stories, don't have many, don't care about those that do. I've always considered war stories to be comparable to fishin stories (my daddy was an E8 killed at Li Kie in Dec 68<sp?>, so I joined for payback, I guess.)... but, maybe it's time, that those stories are told. I never killed any babies, I may have abandoned one or two, unknowingly... Wink

The Swifties are doing a good job. The polls show it. I just wish this was happening in OCTOBER... (Bush really upsets me sometimes, but....I'd rather see him and Rummy continuing on with the war, than see that JFnK TRAITOR get the CIC job. If that happens, katy bar the door.)

I never went in country, but I am a Vietnam Era veteran. I served as a Ground Radio Repairman/Operator for the Airforce from 74-77.

Glad to be here, and support you guys 100%. I happen to think the 60s was the worse thing that ever happened to this country. The military won every engagement, but at home the civilians and our fellow country men let us down.
