22 years active duty 08/82-08/04. Transfer to Fleet Reserve becomes official on 31 Aug.
T. Costello, CAPT USN (ret) was my XO onboard the USS Saipan in 1985. I want to relate a story that I will never forget. We were on a Med cruise and I was part of the night crew. As such we hit our racks after morning quarters. It was during one of the "XO's inspection of messing and berthing spaces" after morning field day that he was in our berthing inspecting. As normal, he would open the curtains of any rack he found closed to ensure it had been made. Well, when he opened mine, there I was asleep with a "Teddy Bear" my fiancee had given me before we left on deployment. I remember opening my eyes, seeing the XO with a look of amusment and asking me "P.O. Coluccio, What the heck are you sleeping with?" When I answered all he said was 'Now I have seen it all!!!" After that day he would ask me if I was sleeping with the teddy bear still whenever he saw me.
Anyway here is where I have been stationed:
08/82-03/83 Boot camp, BE&E school San Diego
04/83-02/84 ET 'A' School Glakes Ill, ET 'C' School, Norfolk,VA
03/84-05/87 USS Saipan LHA-2 1 (N Atlantic, 1 Med, 1 Northern Wedding)
06/87-03/88 SATCOM School, Ft Gordon GA
04/88-05/91 NAVCAMS EASTPAC HI
06/91-05/94 USS Esteem MSO 438 (DECOM)/USS Sacramento AOE-1 (1 WESTPAC)
06/94-03/97 TRF Bangor (A Skimmer in a world of Bubbleheads)
04/97-02/02 USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 (Thank GOD!!! Back to sea!! 2 WESTPACS)
03/02-08/04 FTSCPAC Everett, WA
08/04 Fleet Reserve

Although I saw no direct combat, I do recall that most O2's were considered to be liabilities until they had been in-country at least 3 or 4 months. I also recall several trips to the delta which convinced me that most Swiftboaters had to be insane, heroic, or just plain lucky!
I'm not quite sure where that leaves LTJG Kerry...
When my brother arrived in-country in late August 1968, we both felt it would be chickensh_t for either of us to claim exemption under a family provision which allowed one of us to leave.
I know where that leaves LTJG Kerry.
Incidentally, when I did DEROS, it took me 2 years (PTSD?) to cope with the (so-called) "real world" acceptance of the Kerry/Fonda betrayals. _________________ 1LT-USAECAV 7/68 - 6/69 |

War Dog is a veteran and dog handler in Vietnam - he's helping to coordinate a national memorial for war dogs, most of whom were euthanized in VN, rather than allowing them to come home with their last handler.
His posts are sometimes signed "War woof," by way of joshing around.
Great guy and he knows his stuff. _________________ ~ Echo Juliet ~

EE degree, draft notice , afraid of Army , joined the Navy hoped for
Rhoda Spain, got Littlecreek Va. Ft.Benning, Camp Pendleton and
18 weeks later got to see Qua Viet landing and the beer stack there
back and forth from DaNang and to "other" places to fix electrons , with
the most wonderful "korean civilians" ever put on this earth.
Loved the "bear traps" Gen. Walt put up on some FOB advising
the "non uniform" ones not to sell their dope to his MARINES.
yes 6 captins mast in 18 months and almost awol on RR in Aussie
land. One of the "Starch shirts" ask me on the way back from
Dong Ha to Da Nang one time if I was a "War Car/o/spondant"
When I asked him if he wanted to go back to where I got the
electronic part lying in my lap and help me install it.
One more captins mast. _________________ the strange mr aj |

gulf war vet--combat engineer with 3rd Armored Div. Retired after 23 years of active duty and reserve time.
my thanks to the Swift Boat vets and other Viet Nam Vets. Your service is appreciated. I am glad you finally have an opportunity to take your side of the story to the public. When you came back--you were not allowed to tell your story--the media would not allow it. You are telling the truth--and everyone knows it. TELL IT LOUD AND CLEAR. KEEP TELLING IT. THERE IS EVIL IN THE WORLD--Kerry and company refuse to see it.
My brother served as an Airforce pilot in Viet Nam. His son, my nephew, is now serving in Iraq flying Apache helicopters. My nephew and I talk by email quite a bit. I vented about John Kerry on my last email. Told him his father was a true hero. His dad did his job to the best of his abilty, came home, and went on with his life. Didn't fuss or complain--just lived his life.
Again my deepest thanks to the Swift Boat folks for changing the political landscape in America. The likes of John Kerry can't stand the truth.
Thanks--Blackbear5 _________________ Desert Storm Vet |

It is absolutely great that the swift boat vets have finally called Kerry and his like on their lack of patriotism.
I served 4 years in the 10th mountain division as an officer, and many of my brethren our serving right now in Afghanistan and Iraq and I find it appalling that there are people out there that want to see more of them killed so that Kerry will get elected. When I served under Clinton I remeber many policies that I disagreed with, but when the Commander and Chief called on us we did our duty, no questions asked! What Kerry did after his short stint in Vietnam was truly Un-American.
Thank you Swift Boat Vets for exposing this fraud of an American. |
