RE: The VSM and the stars. The stars are not considered as "additional awards" of the VSM. They indicate campaigns. The medal indicates the service in theater, per the following criteria:
Awarded to all members of the Armed Forces of the United States serving in Vietnam and contiguous waters or airspace there over, after 3 July 1965 through 28 March 1973. Members of the Armed Forces of the United States in Thailand, Laos, or Cambodia, or the airspace there over, during the same period and serving in direct support of operations in Vietnam are also eligible for this award. To be eligible for award of the medal, individual must-
(1) Be attached to or regularly serve for one or more days with an organization participating in or directly supporting military operations; or
(2) Be attached to or regularly serve for one or more days aboard a naval vessel directly supporting military operations; or
(3) Actually participate as a crewmember in one or more aerial flights into airspace above Vietnam and contiguous waters directly supporting military operations; or
(4) Serve on temporary duty for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days in Vietnam or contiguous areas, except that the time limit may be waived for personnel participating in actual combat operations.
Personnel receiving the Vietnam Service Medal are authorized to wear a bronze star to indicate each campaign. There are 17 designated campaigns during the period of 15 March 1962 through 28 January 1973.
So, by meeting one (or more) of the requirements in 1-4 above, they rate the medal. A star indicates each campaign. At the time of Kerry's service aboard the USS GRIDLEY, he was in Vietnam territorial waters for two campaigns. One day is sufficient to qualify.
Kerry rates the ribbon and FOUR campaign stars. I have the military references (OPNAVNOTE 1650) and such in the R&R Consolidation thread, if you need to look it up.
Hassling Kerry about the campaign stars is a losing issue. Let's keep our eye on the prize and not get distracted by non-issues.

| Moderator, should someone contact Lipscomb and advise him that Kerry might be eligible for all 4 stars? He's been pretty good to the SBVT lately and I'm concerned he may have initially been contacted about this by a SBVT. Your call. You want to keep him friendly and let him know he can trust SBVT. |

Just a thought, if he is entitled to the stars, shouldn't he only have three on his ribbon? I mean the ribbon counts as one, correct? By him having four on his ribbon, doesn't that mean he has five?
