One has to be blind and/or deaf to have missed the mantra of Kerry supporters and surrogates on TV, editorial writers and letter to the editor writers as they proclaim the myth:

After all, John Kerry "heroically" and "valiantly" volunteered for Swift
boat service.

Every time we hear or see this blantantly false statement we should take the opportunity to remind the author or speaker that John Kerry is on record, in his own words, as to why he volunteered for Swift boat service. Read on.

In 1986 a book "The Vietnam Experience-A War Remembered", by Boston Publishing, contained a six page contributory article by then Senator John Forbes Kerry. In the article Kerry felt compelled to devote a complete paragraph to explain why he volunteered for Swift Boat service.
What he wrote follows:

"The first trip to Vietnam did give me a heightened curiosity by virtue of
having been so near and having been part of of the support operation.
But volunteering for the Swift boats had nothing to do with my curiosity
about the war. They attracted me because it was the one thing you could
do as a junior officer and have your own command. In fact, when I
signed up for the Swift boats they had very little to do with the war. They
were engaged in coastal patrolling and that's what I thought I was going
to be doing. Although I wanted to go back and see for myself what was
going on, I didn't really want to get involved on the war."

Now, you have to be a world class spinmaster to turn Kerry's own words into- he "heroically" and "valiantly" volunteered for Swift boat service.
Kerry's explanation sounds more like he wanted to get some experience
for postwar boat races between Hyannis and Nantucket with Ted Kennedy.

Just one more Kerry myth goes up in smoke.

I wonder if this is the same book Michael Kranish quoted him from last year in a several part series lauding his life in the Boston Globe;

Quote:
"I didn't have any real feel for what the heck was going on [in the war]," Kerry has recalled.

"I didn't really want to get involved in the war," Kerry said in a little-noticed contribution to a book of Vietnam reminiscences published in 1986. "When I signed up for the swift boats, they had very little to do with the war. They were engaged in coastal patrolling and that's what I thought I was going to be doing."
