Trust me Zell was just a pissed off Marine after Mathews attempted ambush. _________________ "An activist is the person who cleans up the water, not the one claiming its dirty."

It shouldn't be a problem to get the written transcript. I went to MSNBC.com and did a search (left hand side of the page) for "Hardball transcripts." Got a page full, including the one from Aug. 31--so maybe Sep. 1 will be ready in the morning . . . Can't wait to read it. I saw the event, but would like to have it to savor forever!
I saw that they had some video clips available online as well, including some excerpts from Hardball. Maybe if we all contact MSNBC and ask for the video of that segment, they will post it. I looked for contact info--hope this is the correct email address: viewerservices@msnbc.com
The email for Hardball is hardball@msnbc.com, but I doubt an email there would get past Chrissie!

WOW. I´ve never been very political. Never knew if I was conservative or liberal or Demo or Repub. Figured they were all pretty sleazy, self-serving slugs. I just saw, for the first time, in Zell´s speech, a man that I could trust to do the Right Thing. To act for the good of the country and its people and not just for himself. Just a gut feeling but I´m not often wrong with those. One just knows when a CO is _good_ CO - even though he may be a flaming ass and even if you do not agree with every decision. But one knows and respects and trusts.
He seems pretty strong for 72. At 76, could he still be a contender? Perhaps we could have a third party that the majority of the country could support?

Query about Freedom of Press Highlights Angry Chris Matthews-Zell Miller Debate
By E & P Staff
Published: September 01, 2004
NEW YORK Probably the most incendiary moment in all of the television coverage of the Republican National Convention so far occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday night, during a Chris Matthews interview with Senator Zell Miller on MSNBC, which started hot and then grew angry after a question about reporters and freedom the press.
"You're hopeless," Miller told Matthews, dead serious, speaking over a hook-up from Madison Square Garden, where he had earlier delivered the keynote address. "I wish I was with you there because I want to get in your face." Then Miller said he wished they were back in the age when you could challenge someone to a duel. "I don't know why I came on this program," he added, amidst four minutes of heated exchanges.
Matthews had gotten on Miller's case right from the start, asking him if he really believed what he had said in his speech about Senator John Kerry wanting to defend America with "spitballs." As Miller fudged his answer, and Matthews in his customary style cut him short or talked over him, they each started shouting. Miller told Matthews to "get out of my face," later saying he wanted to get in Matthews' face.
Then Matthews asked him why he had said in his speech that "it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press." Matthews said it was such an obvious thing to say, wasn't he just looking for an easy "anti-media" applause line? That's when Miller went ballistic and nearly stalked off, with Matthews, not exactly backing down, struggling to calm him, which he did, after another minute of shouting.
The interview closed with Matthews saying that now Miller probably hated him, but invited him back on the show Thursday night when he could talk with Joe Scarborough who, he said, would probably be kinder. Miller didn't answer yes or no. |

I suggest listening to Imus in the morning . . . Imus is a big Zell fan, and he often scorns Matthews. I bet he'll have a heyday tomorrow if he knows about this. He's on at 6 am EST on MSNBC TV. |

For the spyware/junkware wary:
THE MILLER-MATTHEWS TRANSCRIPT [09/02 12:29 AM]
Ultra-cool Kerry Spot reader Joe TIVOed Hardball, and sends in a transcript:
Matthews: Do you believe truthfully that John Kerry wants to defeat the world with spitballs?
Zell: That was a metaphor. You know what a metaphor is?
Matthews: Well, what do you mean by that metaphor?
Zell: He wanted to cancel these weapons programs. Cancel, means to do away with. I think we ought to cancel this interview.
Matthews: Well, that would be my loss Senator. Well, let me ask you about this because I think you have a view on reporters of the world. You said, “It was often the soldier, not the reporter, who has given the freedom of the press.” What was your point?
Zell: Well, it certainly got a rise out of you.
Matthews: Well, it’s a shot.
Zell: You’re a reporter. You didn’t have anything to do with the freedom of the press.
Matthews: Why did you single out reporters… Because you could get an applause line at a conservative convention.
J.C. Watts: Now come on, Chris.
Zell: You’re hopeless. I wish I was over there. In fact I wish we lived in the…
Matthews: If a Republican Senator broke ranks and spoke for the democrats would you respect him?
Zell: Yes, I’ve seen that happen from time to time.
Matthews: Jim Jeffords switched parties after getting elected…
Zell: Wait a minute, wait a minute… If you’re going to ask a question..
Matthews: It’s a tough question. It takes a few words.
Zell: Get out of my face! If you’re going to ask me a question, then step back, and let me answer! I wish we lived in a day where you can challenge a person to a duel. Now that would be pretty good. (Norah Odonell loud laughter)
Don’t pull that stuff on me like you did that young lady when you had her brow beaten to death. I’m not her! I’m not her! You get in my face I’m going to get back in your face. [Jim's note: I presume this is a reference to Michelle Malkin?]
Matthews: Senator can I speak softly to you?
Zell: No, no. You won’t give me a chance to answer. You ask these questions and then you just talk over while I’m trying to answer just like you did that woman the other day. Why don’t why I even came on this program.
Matthews: Well, I’m glad you did. Well let me ask you this…
Zell: No, Are you going to shut up after you ask me! Are going to give me a chance to answer it.
Matthews: Yes, sir. I’m going to give you a chance to answer. |
