Ben Barnes to break silence on "60 Minutes"
The Republican campaign gets ready for shock waves, as the former Texas official who says he pulled strings to get George W. Bush into the Air National Guard finally goes public.

By Eric Boehlert
Sept. 1, 2004 | The campaign battle over Vietnam War records is still raging, but President Bush may soon be the one answering uncomfortable questions about his past service. Ben Barnes, the former lieutenant governor of Texas, will finally break his silence and talk to the press about what role he played in helping Bush get a coveted slot in the Texas Air National Guard in 1968. Sources say Barnes has already sat down for a "60 Minutes" interview that will air next week. A "60 Minutes" spokesperson declined to comment, saying the program does not discuss reports that are in progress.
Barnes made headlines last week when his videotaped comments that he was "very ashamed" of getting Bush into the National Guard began circulating on the Web. He said the remorse was prompted by a recent visit to the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, where he saw the names of thousands of other young men who did not enjoy the connections of the Bush family. Barnes made his comments in May and the video was posted on a pro-Kerry Web site in June, but word of it only began to spread widely last Friday.

Heard that Ben Barnes is a hugh supporter of Kerry and active in fund raising. Wonder if 60 minutes will report that also?

Don't freak out, Ben Barnes is a major supporter of Kerry and the
Democrats, he can be called out as how much money he has put on
Kerry, plus the thousands of people who lost out when he filed for
bankruptcy, a BIG TIME bankruptcy. Ben Barnes has been despised
by Texans for decades, there's plenty of dirt of him if you know where
to dig. |

I thought Barnes had already been proven to be a liar?
[The problem with Barnes' story: Bush entered the Texas Air National Guard in 1968 at which time Barnes was Speaker of the House. Barnes did not take office as Lieutenant Governor until 1969 and thus could not have done what he claimed. Some readers may best remember Barnes as a central unindicted co-conspirator in the Sharpstown Stock Scandal that rocked the Texas legislature in 1971.]

If the Dems and MSM try to turn this into a brawl like this they are going to regret it ... GWB can sit back and let Swit Vets shred Kerry even worse and Barnes will be easily dismissed when there is no other "proof". No documents, no other "witnesses" etc ... not that the MSM will mention that ... _________________ JJC

Big news.
Still for Bush
I don't care how he got into the guard. At least he served and he sure as h--- didn't go and deal with the enemy. I would rather someone not serve and do what Kerry did to our men and country. He served to get medals to be a politican/. |

Hmmm... Wonder if they will mention all the times in the past that he has said the opposite, including one time that I believe was under oath.
BFD anyway, anyone who volunteered for alternate service to avoid the draft is a criminal? Well then that's Kerry too, isn't it, and probably every 50 year-old member of the MSM today. |

I heard on hannity kerry also applied for a deferment and Larry Elder wrote a article on the same thing, saying he applied for a deferment to study in Paris and was denied by the draft board. _________________ twicearound |

I'll take bets that 60 min will not mention the fact that Kerry tried to get a deferment to study in Paris and was refused, then enlisted in the Naval Reserve. _________________ DenisC

I bet your right!!!! Check out Larry Elder's article at townhall.com. I have emailed anyone and everyone, called fox's story line, called rush, hannity and they wouldn't take the question that day. I want someone to ask his flunkies when they say he said send me, about his deferment. He did the same as bush he just got called up. This drives me crazy. _________________ twicearound |
