Former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland, who joined Mr. Kerrey in demanding Mr. Rove's resignation on behalf of the campaign, said the veterans attacking Mr. Kerry's war record have contributed to a spike in suicides, which, he says, has occurred among veterans.

Has anyone heard anything about this? Any background data on where Cleland is getting his information?

the only suicide spikes they saw were because of the 1971 speeches and assorted antiwar propaganda

You have got to be kidding...

Talk about a stretch...

How could that paper even include that quote???

As for suicides, the only linking I would like to see is between Admiral Boorda, and the fact that Kerry has questionable medals..... Where is Newsweek with their investigation of Kerry?

Regards,
Joe

Cleland is clearly confused.

There is evidence that the atmosphere in the country contributed to higher rates of PTSD (they used to call it shell shock) among Vietnam vets than those of any other war.

The Kerry campaign is growing more and more desperate grasping at any straw. Clelands comments are an embarassment particularly in light of what Kerry said when he returned from Vietnam.

Sure would like to see the statistical analysis he referenced....he did reference one didn't he?

Can't see how it could be determined there has been a suicide spike in such a short period, and, be able to relate it to the swiftvets.

Cleland just keeps embarrassing himself more and more for his chum Kerry....a lot of books are going to be written about this election.

I like Max, but, being from GA, I’m familiar with his occasional exaggerations. Frankly, Max’s suggestion that these campaign ads are contributing to a spike in suicides among veterans is ridiculous—he has no evidence to support that.

(edited out a probably innocent comment which could be construed to be quite insensitive - EJ)

Statements like that are right out of the politburo playbook. Too bad Max has been bought into reading it out loud.

Crying veteran suicides isn't new. Remember, throughout the 80s, they were claiming as many vets as are listed on the Wall have committed suicide since Vietnam. It's an old scare tactic still painting us as unable to sope with society after all the horrors the Government subjected us too. Right out of Kerry's so called testimony.

Incidentally, studies have shown that veteran suicides are no higher than anyone elses.

Is he talking about all veterans, or just vietnam era veterans, or did you have to be in-country to become suicidal? Or only veterans who have been shot at (hum, shot at once, twice, or more than that). Anyway, just in case, I will tell my wife to keep the knives locked up for the next days or two until I forget about this issue. Oh yeah, I better call up all of our relatives that are veterans. I don't think they know they are supposed to be depressed, at least temporarily. Now, remind me again, is this retroactive to wars before Vietnam...I need to know because I have a lot of relatives who were in Korea and WWII.
