Narcissistic Personality Disorder is one of 4 in Cluster B Personality Disorders. The others are:

1. Anti-Social;
2. Borderline;
3. Histrionic.

They all have some characteristics that are similar across type. One of which---and perhaps the main one---is a sense of ENTITLEMENT. It is not that the person will walk are around saying they are entitled or necessarily saying "give me this or give me that," but their various behaviors will demand it by placing others in positions of making it difficult to deny them and dangerous if they do, so watch out. All four of these personality disorders can be perilous to your mental health if you have to interact with them for any extended period; therefore, it is not a good idea to elect them to the presidency.

They also tend to occur in Dissociative Identity Disorder, formally Multiple Personality Disorder. They also occurred in the last president and his wife; not multiple personality disorder, though, to the best of my knowledge.

I am a retired commenity mental health clinician.

9 for 9. How is this treated? Given we cannot accede to his delusion, do we give him a dose of
reality. In a national cathartic movement, should we not send him packing?

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is very, very difficult to treat. I'm retired, so I don't want to even try.

I say vote him down and out.

One of the most telling things I have read related to Kerry's flip flopping was in an article by David Broder, liberal Washington Post columnist. Broder said that "in a 2002 conversation, Kerry told me he thought it would be doubly advantageous that "I fought in Vietnam and also I fought against the Vietnam War," apparently not recognizing that some would see far too much political calculation in such a bifurcated record". Sound a little like I voted for the $87 billion before I voted against it. The Democrats try to characterize his contradictory positions as that of a complex, nuanced man. There is nothing nuanced about him. He is a man with no integrity who intentionally takes two sides of an issue for pure political purposes. I don't know what that makes him in psychologocal terms but there is no doubt in my mind that this is a sick man.

I would like to suggest that Kerry's cluster is "clusterf#@k" as in "a walking clusterf#@k".
I can't beleive that I stumbled upon this thread. I am a graduate student in counseling and I have a class this semester on psychopathology ehich uses the DSM IV as a text. I'm thinking of printing some of these entries and sliding them under the door of a couple of my professors who support Kerry.

When you have a sophisticated appreciation for the psychological diversity of mankind you tend to notice such things. The essence of the nature of personality disorders is that the behavior exhibited in the patient is an exaggeration of the traits we all have.

Let me amplify; if I spend an inordinate amount of time packing my suitcase for a trip and making sure I have everything I need, one might call me responsible. If I spend so much time packing my suit case that I miss my flight, I am obsessive/compulsive.

Another Case History

If I find out that three purple hearts will get me out of a war zone and I “fudge” the facts to get out of Viet Nam, I might be called self serving and cowardly. Keep in mind self serving and cowardly are actually ordinary traits of humanity.

If I then declare myself a military hero, even though others know better, and run for office on my military record I probably have a personality disorder.

Please see my other post in this thread about the New Personality Type, by Dr. Oldham.

In social services I cross thes folks quite frequently.

Not to be confused with conceite.

Conceit says I am the "Best one"

Narcissism says "I am the only one"

No responsibilty for their actions.

Everything is someone elses fault.

Self promoting

Hieghtened sense of expectancy

Low tolerance for stress or not getting their way.

Immaturity

No insight
