Swift boat veterans have every right to speak out
8/29/2004
I am writing in response to the letter, " "Veterans for Truth' are telling lies." The Swift boat veterans - 25 times the number of men Sen. John Kerry produces - question his fitness to serve as commander in chief. Kerry made this an issue by his grand entrance into Boston Harbor with his crew, and by devoting much of his acceptance speech to his Vietnam heroics but only seconds to his undistinguished Senate career.
Do the Swift boat vets have a right to gripe? Absolutely. They provide overwhelming facts to support a position that undermines Kerry's self-serving and self-promoting actions in Vietnam. And if turning himself into a (pseudo) war hero was not enough, he had the unmitigated gall to return to the United States and trash the American soldiers and sailors serving honorably in Vietnam.
Kerry wants it both ways - war hero and war protester; pro-Iraq war and anti-war candidate. Kerry made his service an issue. As such, it deserves the same scrutiny any suspect claim made by a candidate would receive. Some made much of the fact that President Bush will not stop John O'Neill and company. Why should he? Did Kerry stop Michael Moore or the Hollywood and rock and roll stars who continue to attack Bush? Even if he wanted to, what right would Bush have to silence brave men who served honorably and who resent Kerry's deceit? _________________ 1SG Peter B Wigdor US Army Ret
