It is now full court press time and the the entire democrat arsenal will be used to rescue Kerry. Their real ace in the hole will be the debates. A long time democrat opertive, Janet Brown, has chosen 3 liberal democrats ( Lehrer, Schieffer and Gibson ) to moderate the Pres. debates and another, Gwen Eiffel, to moderate the VP debate. Can you believe it?

I can Believe it.

The last 16 months........ four years, have left me saddend with how Jim Lehrer has let his show slip into the land of non-news.

I think Bush will do just fine in the debates.

The President officially did not agree to the debates yet, IMHO I feel he might be looking to even the playing field. And yes, he will do just fine when the time comes. Cheney is the key over Edwards, he can pound him on tort reform..It'll be a sticky one for him to weasel out of..

talked abt it with my dad, moderators do little to nothing in the debates...while they can show an obvious bias, they have no freedom to do what Chris Matthews, for instance, would do in a debate.

the questions are agreed upon by both parties, so there will be no surprise questions to either man.

If bush goes in the same vein as he did in the second half (last third, whatever) of his acceptance speech, he'll spank Kerry so hard the man will be lurching around for days from impact.

I am surprised that so many people do not understand the format for the debates. Only the moderators can choose or know the questions that will be asked. Most of the 9 member board of commissioners are Mass. liberals with a few nice Republicans. Caroline Kennedy is on the board. This is Ted Kennedy`s niece. Of course Bush has not agreed as yet but now that the three sites have been chosen ( Coral Gables, St. Louis, and Tempe ) it will be difficult for Bush to back out for fear of alienating the three crucial states where the debtes are scheduled.

Why should President Bush debate Kerry. Kerry has taken three or four sides of every issue. Let him debate himself.

Suggested bush line if he does decide to debate.:

I know John kerry, and at least one of these men inside him is no John Kerry.

According to the Bush people a couple days ago, they "haven't even started negotiations" on the debates. (I forget where I read it; sorry)

You have to trust Bush to do the right thing. He has to WANT a second term and to run a competent campaign. If he does (and I believe he does), then he or his team will naturally insist on reasonable conditions for the debates. And if they don't get them, they will be competent enough to make the voters understand how the other side was being unreasonable.

I sent several e-mails to the RNC two weeks ago pitching hard for Brit Hume to be a moderator. I even got a response thank you saying that it would be brought to the attention of the Chairman that morning.

I sent to these addresses:

James Baker is negotiating for the Bush/Cheney campaign. He is shrewed and will not fall for any trap.

Also, the debates will go well because of the difference between the candidates. Bush is comfortable in his skin. Kerry doesn't know who he is pretending to be from one hour to the next. This will be obvious those who are still objective.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but that does not make the pig Marilyn Monroe or Charlize Theron. Kerry will come off as the pompous, arrogant, self-absorbed traitor he is.

If the debates look one-sided, that will work in Bush's favor. Americans like fair play.

I sure hope the Bush handlers even the field with moderators. They need to counter with Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Brit Hume -- with Michael Reagan moderating.

One thing is for sure. They will do what all others have done over Bush's career. Underestimate him.

The only real solution is to level the playing field by unconventional means. Perhaps the SBVT's "October surprise," i.e., a commercial that details Kerry's meeting with the Viet Cong and NV "delegations" in Paris, should be accelerated by a couple of weeks so the voters know about what happened. This could force the moderators to at least address Kerry's lies and possible criminality.

Agreed re Baker--I think he's one of the most impressive political operators in American history, and I mean that in a very good sense. His work as Reagan's Chief of Staff and his diplomacy as Sec State during Desert Storm were both legendary for their effectiveness.

Baker won't let bad things happen to good people.
