This comes from a e-mail sent to the corner on NRO.

KERRY HITS THE WRONG OHIO TOWN [KJL ]
An e-mail from Steubenville, Ohio, hometown of the Catholic University of Steubenville:
John Kerry came to Steubenville yesterday and quickly realized he was in the wrong city. Steubenville is a city where there are 6 Democrats for every 1 Republican, and the Steelworkers unions are alive and active. You would think this was solid John Kerry territory. The mob used to control Steubenville and now the unions think they do. Well, they are wrong.

The Kerry campaign first scheduled a visit to Steubenville two weeks ago but "scheduling conflicts" came up at the last minute. Oh, and did I mention that Kerry wanted to use a local gun range as a campaign stop, but the owner turned him down? And that the Fire Department Union President told the Kerry campaign that not only would he not organize the union to support Kerry at the rally, but that he was supporting President Bush! The Kerry campaign took for granted that this area was sown up. Mistake number one. So they rescheduled the campaign trip when Franciscan University was back in session. Mistake number two.

Before Kerry arrived there was a huge pro-life march led by Franciscan University students, 500 strong. "You can't be Catholic and pro-abortion", read some of their signs. Students and members of local Catholic parishes were full of energy and FoxNews reported that this was the largest protest against Kerry outside of the Democratic Convention. Just picture 500 pro-lifers marching from their college campus to meet Kerry. Where else but in Steubenville, Ohio! Though the Franciscan University did not organize the event, it is well known for its orthodox Catholic education which encourages students to put their faith into action. These students simply cherish their Catholic faith and could not stand to let Kerry use their faith as a political prop. I am proud of my alma mater.

….The Kerry campaign not only made a mistake in their timing, but they also chose to hold the rally in a public park which should be open to all the public. Mistake number three. The police chief, sheriff, and mayor all agreed with me that protesters and their signs would be allowed inside the Kerry rally site. Freedom of speech is alive and well here in Ohio. The Kerry campaign flipped out!

So, now add another 500 local Bush supporters to the Kerry rally. They tried to turn up the music but they could not drown us out. According to the Herald Star (local press), "The crowd, estimated by officials as 3,500 strong, was almost split in half with people for and against the Massachusetts senator." John Kerry must know he has a problem when over 15% of his audience was booing him. We were respectful and did not heckle him - but upon arrival and when he sought our applause he got something he didn't expect. As the press arrived a feisty nine year old little girl began shouting, "We want Bush!", and we all chanted along. The campaign staff was beside themselves. This is history in the making! Even places like Steubenville are not supporting John Kerry. He is in serious trouble.

My friends, John Kerry will not be coming back to Steubenville. Kerry was visibly shaken when he received boos from the audience. You may not see this outside of FoxNews, and the AP is falsely reporting that only a few dozen protesters met Kerry.

One Union Guy says he will use a FREE kerry shirt to wax his car..... Smile Smile

This article says about 400 showed up.... cool....

Pro-life groups protest

STEUBENVILLE - Several groups expressed concern about Sen. John Kerry's stance on abortion and offered encouragement for the candidate during his visit Saturday.
Catholics For Life, a group formed by Franciscan University of Steubenville student Gabe Hahn, led a 400-person march from the university's campus to the rally at Old Fort Steuben.

Local churches and Catholics from throughout the Diocese of Steubenville took part in the march they said was meant for reverence, prayer, sacrifice and to challenge Kerry to stand up for life.

"We prayed all four mysteries of the rosary," Emily Bissonnette, a junior at the university, said about the walk to the rally. "We also have people praying back at school."

Members of the group identified themselves not as an organization, but as a group of Catholics, Bissonnette said.

"This will send a strong message to Kerry and encourage him to do the same," she said.

Another group, the Future, displayed its opinion on the abortion issue. The non-partisan group is made up of high school and college students based out of Columbus who seek to protect the rights of unborn children, according to Ben Govero, a member of the group.

"We are asking Kerry to support women. He can't be a politician if he cannot stand up for what he believes," said Govero. Six members of the group were present at the rally.

Govero said the group regularly fights for the pro-life issue and attends rallies and concerts. The group recently sent a petition to Kerry's offices in Columbus asking to speak with him on the issue and is currently waiting for a response. "Abortion is a failed social expression. Women deserve love and respect just like the unborn child," Govero said.

Families against the Kerry campaign voiced their opinions through the display of signs and articles of clothing that expressed support for President Bush.

Seven members of the Nelson Family of Steubenville brought signs which showed support for the president.

Mark Nelson said he believes Kerry should stand up for his faith and decide his stance and his beliefs.

"Kerry calls himself pro-abortion and Catholic," said Nelson. "That is not what Catholics believe."

Three sisters came together to show their support for Bush among the crowd. Justine Schmiesing, Laura Sirilla and Anna Franzonello, all of Steubenville, brought their families totalling 13 protesters.

"We don't support him on many different issues, not just the pro-life issue," said Franzonello. "The government is responsible to the people, not the people to the government just like Arnold Schwarzenegger said at the Republican National Convention."

"What has Kerry done for steel in the Senate? The environmental lobby is much more just like Bill Clinton with tariffs on steel," said Mike Sirilla.

Michael Hernon, the city's councilman at large, provided his political preference by passing out Bush-Cheney signs to those waiting in line.

"If you look at the record, Kerry is not good for this area," he said. "He is not in sync with steel. This is the largest counter-rally protest during a Kerry rally in the nation."

Ron Trimmer of Steubenville is a union worker belonging to AFSCME. He went along with fellow union workers to the event and was given a T-shirt expressing union support for Kerry. Since he pays his dues in the union, he decided he will keep the shirt because it was free. "I'll wax my car with it," Trimmer said.

In response to the protesters and other political activist groups, many pro-Kerry rally attendees found them to be a nuisance.

"They should thank us because it is the Kerry campaign. We wouldn't be allowed to have opposing signs if Bush were here," said Pam Kennedy-Carpenter, a Pittsburgh resident.

"I signed up to show support. The tickets said 'no signs allowed' and these protesters are getting away with the signs."

You need to send this to Drudge, so that the AP version isn't the only one to be seen nationally.

Here's an article from the Herald Star (Steubenville local paper) that paints a different picture.

Local Groups Show Support

The following says the crowd support was split in half.

I just had a thought.

What if we could get video of events like this from Steubenville following the Kerry campaign around....have the focus be the Anti-Kerry Movement, what the MSM won't show you from the campaign trail.

Putting into pictures the AKM might be very powerful stuff to become a collage style ad to air in the final weeks.

...or maybe not.

As well he might be!--Historically, Dems could almost take groups like unions and students of almost any and every stripe for granted--And he wants to paint himself as being more able to serve the "common man"????--This kind of thing ought to tell the Kerry campaign just how out-of-touch with rank-and-file Americans they really are--

It ought to, but with his arrogance, it probably won't--C

The thing that amazes me is the fact he was "shaken" poor little man.
How in the world could he handle the vicious attacks the president has
lived with for four years?
In the book, "Misunderestimated" (I love that word) they tell of some
of the situations the president has been in, and Kerry would last about
ten minutes before leaving the area. This can go with the job, heck,
being shot can go with the job!
He is such a pantywaist, a real sensitive beyond commensense man,
who better toughen up because it is going t get worse for him as
people are becoming more aware of the truth about his war record,
his afterwar record, his time in the senate, and his stand on abortion.
Good! Wink

John kerry visited newark, ohio on friday. Newark I would estimate at a pro republican town, so he was in the right town. ! thing he didnt expect was that no 1 and i mean noone showed up. of course just like any pro sports team. You are going to have a few followers in ever town, but beyond that no1 wanted anything to do with it. Lets put it this way when I woke up on friday morning, and did my normal errands. It was business as usual. I just wanted to add this little info. Joe diffie a country singer came to visit 2 years ago, and the whole town was bascially a ghost town. I hope that puts it in a little perspective. I wish i had my camera with me when I drove up state route 13, cuase all was seen was huge signs saying buckeyes are for Bush. ohhh I loved it. Its rumored that bush will be here to visit in 3 weeks.
