I didn't hear Major say that, but I'll admit that I wasn't listening with both ears. |

You are right. However, the suit being brought by McCain/Bush would limit 527s to only hard money contributions which is fine by us. _________________ Nomorelies Make a donation HERE |

I saw Major Garrett's story on the Swiftees, and came away with a very different feeling. No ads running...they may run more...they may not. They will stop talking about the medals (wonder if O'Neill's interview with O'Reilly tomorrow will include medal talk), and they are 100% behind getting anyone to vouch for President Bush's ANG service...
Since the Swiftees were NOT supposed to be about President Bush, but ONLY about John Kerry, they will be perceived as changing their stories - God knows they've been accused of that already.
Maybe they've got plans for September and October and don't want to reveal their hand, but sitting on a couple million and not doing much will not encourage more contributions, and it will certainly not keep their names in the news. Maybe they feel their work is done
To be honest, I was not at all pleased with Garrett's take on the Swiftees latest strategy. |

Jette,
What I heard about the ads is that:
1) they will not run more ads on the medal flap.
2) they have not decided whether they will create new ads or run the non-medal ads they already have.
I missed the part about TANG. |

I watched the report and I don't think that's what he said. What he noted was that a majority of the contributions to Swifties was "hard money," which I understand to mean money that is under the limit mandated by federal campaign contribution laws. And I believe his point was that, since the majority of contributions were "hard money," with the exception of the original $200,000 seed money, then Swifties would not be hurt by modifications made to the 527 regulations that Bush and McCain are proposing -- that 527 contributions be subjected to the same limits as are contributions to the campaigns themsleves. I didn't see that as a bad thing -- I think it was a good thing. They were acknowledging that this effort is supported by a very broad base of contributors, not just a few wealthy, disgruntled persons. |

Kathy Kay is right. Major said that all of the contributions to SBVT
would conform to the changes in the 527s that are being proposed -
except for the initial "seed money" which exceeded the limit permitted
for "soft money" contributors but was perfectly legal under current law.
I thought it was an excellent report, showing that the SBVT have a
broad base of support and that they are truly a "grassroots" group -
not an arm of the RNC as the Democratic 527s clearly are an arm
of the DNC. He made it sound that the SBVT will have more to say
in the future and had only taken a break for a few days. Major is
keeping the SBVT in the news even though they do not have a new
ad running! He is definitely "in our corner". _________________ Susan R. Morton |

ALthough you may not agree with me..........
I think it would be a good idea to limit contributions to 2000 dollars per individual. This would keep grass roots real and keep billionaires from shouting over the little guy. |
