Also, I read on another thread that the White House released these documents AFTER THEY WERE SENT TO THEM BY CBSNEWS!! Is this correct and is there no independent verification by the White House of the authenticity of these documents???

Don't "misunderstimate" the White House, Debbie! (lol) |

If you look at the "(F", the "ty" and the "LT" the letters interlock. In typing tems this is called kerning. Kerning is more sophisticated than proportional. In kerning, the letters are adjusted to the neighboring letters, for instance the tail of the "y" in duty goes under the preceding "t".
I am looking at the May 4 memo. In 1973 there only major US news papers were using kerning. It is in modern MS Word. _________________ Vote early. Vote often. The Democrate way... |

older fax and copy machines would often stretch a document in one direction, but not necessarily the other.
Today's machines are much better, but still not perfect.
The fact these are near perfect matches in both axes with a newly generated copy leads me to assume that they were not faxed or copied at any time greater than 8-10 years ago (never mind the lack of date/time stamp) and if they were multi-generationally copied it was on a recent machine with good optical quality so as to not have the stretching.
we always ran into problems trying to cut and paste sketches that came in over fax machines, or copied on a xerox, into hand draw stuff... the match was never perfect. |

I just called Benjamin Ginsberg at his office in D.C. and left a message to get behind us on this. _________________ Nomorelies Make a donation HERE |

I opened Microsoft Word, set the font to Microsoft’s Times New Roman, tabbed over to the default tab stop to enter the date “18 August 1973,” then typed the rest of the document purportedly from the personal records of the late Lieutenant Colonel Jerry B. Killian.
And my Microsoft Word version, typed in 2004, is an exact match for the documents trumpeted by CBS News as “authentic.”
A screenshot of the “original” document as found at CBS:
A screenshot of my Microsoft Word document:
The spacing is not just similar—it is identical in every respect. Notice that the date lines up perfectly, all the line breaks are in the same places, all letters line up with the same letters above and below, and the kerning is exactly the same. And I did not change a single thing from Word’s defaults; margins, type size, tab stops, etc. are all using the default settings. The one difference (the “th” in “187th” is slightly lower) is probably due to a slight difference between the Mac and PC versions of the Times New Roman font, or it could be an artifact of whatever process was used to artificially “age” the document. (Update: I printed the document and the “th” matches perfectly in the printed version. It’s a difference between screen and printer fonts.)
There is absolutely no way that this document was typed on any machine that was available in 1973.
UPDATE at 9/9/04 10:57:34 am:
And this is not the only document that was apparently written with Microsoft Word; Jeremy Chrysler had the same idea and discovered another exact correspondence: Bush Guard Documents Forged?
UPDATE at 9/9/04 11:28:55 am:
Here are the two documents superimposed—and please note that when I cut and pasted the images, I just eyeballed it with no special effort to match sizes:

vickie,
I don't think kerning is in use here. Kerning is not a default setting in Word and someone who'd do this sloppy job of typing (unless they're trying to make it look sloppy) wouldn't have any idea how to turn it on.
They did turn off automatic numbering and formatting, but they were to stupid to use a typewriter font.

Tom is right about the print quality (ink jet vs. typewriter ribbon). |

I think these documents were scanned not FAXed and I think that the "dust" was applied with a pencil or pen. |

Evidently Kelli Edwards at CBS got the documents and submitted them. Where did she get them? _________________ Nomorelies Make a donation HERE |

Short of a "sprinkling with holy water" do we all agree that these documents are forged?
How about a quick poll of veterans and professionals?

Military Professionals for content and typography and computer professionals for the font and organization of the documents.
and another thing! I'm not trying to kill the thread! I just want to call Major Garrett and tell him we all agree.
