The event will honour people who came to Canada and resisted war efforts, from burning their draft cards during the Vietnam War to leaving the army to protest the war in Iraq, Romano said.
Musicians – many of who participated in the anti-war movement – will play at the festival, scheduled for July 8-9, 2006. Historians and critics of U.S. foreign policy will speak and a documentary about American war resisters by director Michelle Mason will be screened.
Estimates of the number of Americans who came to Canada because they opposed the Vietnam War range from 50,000 to 125,000.
They sought refuge in Canada between 1964 and 1977 in one of the biggest political exoduses in U.S. history.
The first wave of Vietnam era immigrants, called "draft dodgers," was largely middle class and educated.
Deserters from the army came later, mostly with little education or money.
Many of the war resisters settled in British Columbia, especially in the Gulf Islands, the Sunshine Coast and the West Kootenay, the B.C. Interior region where Nelson is located.
Thousands returned south after President Jimmy Carter granted them amnesty in 1977, but the 1986 census indicated that half stayed in Canada. |

I will sent some money and MRE's if they will all continue to stay there. 
I see now why the Canucks sat out assistance for Iraq.....probably can't raise a fighting force large enough to patrol the swimming pool at the Badhdad Holiday Inn.

The Canadians did send ships and some aircraft to support the
fight on terrorism, along with 2,000 peace keepers to Afghanistan,...however they did not directly send troops or support us in Iraq. In fact,
many in the Chretien administration bad mouthed the US and our
president. Many in Quebec were for Saddam winning over us.
However, many in the western provinces were all for Canada
helping us in Iraq and were disappointed in their government´s
decision. Iraq split the country.
If the truth
were to be told, the Canadian military has been desimated by
budget transfers and cuts...mainly transfers to social programs.
Why spend money on the military when Uncle Sam will come
to the rescue. Their navy has a hard time manning their ships
and their aircraft have difficulty operating (at times) with
other NATO members, especially in the area of communications
via secure means, etc.
Their current Prime Minister was the former Finance Minister
under PM Cretien and was responsible for much of the military
cuts. Paul Martin´s policies are much like the former PM, and as a result
I don´t see a lot of things changing in the future. Time will tell
since the Liberal Party did not get a majority in the last election.
A last thought. Kerry speaks French and so does the PM of
Canada. But nothing will change with Canada (in helping
us in Iraq), even
if Kerry wins (God forbid) and speaks French day and night to their
PM.

My ex-wife grew up in Aurora, Colorado with a kid next door that loved everything military. The kid dressed military, played military, read military books, owned toy soldiers that he used to reenact famous battles, and watched every military movie multiple times. He lived, ate, and breathed military from about four years old until he received his draft notice in 1969. He moved to Canada. Kind of reminds me of a reverse John Kerry. He was also born in Aurora, Colorado. Maybe something in the water?

The festival co-ordinator says the festival will go on as planned and will not succumb to a war of words, but adds that organizers are looking for a new home for the monument – which is being moved out of Nelson.
