FYI: The "TANG Memo on Bush" topic in this same forum (Geedunk & Scuttlebut) has about 10x the info on this same subject.

Actually, as I once read long ago, it is not power that breeds corruption.
It is immunity. And THAT goes a long way toward explaining types like Kerry. Or CBS. They think they have immunity. But, in their arrogance, they underestimated people like the swiftvets, those on this forum, or the blogosphere.

Wherever this goes, what a fabulous development in the story of freedom and democracy!
The power of the people...

I think that Lincoln's remarks are right on here. "You can fool some of the people, some of the time. But you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

SO apparently anyone who used 60 minutes as a source needs to be targeted, Boston globe, NYT, Miami Herald, Denver post,

We need or rather require a retraction ON THE SAME PAGE THE ORIGINAL STORY WAS WRITEN.

IF, those papers are forgeries, look for CBS to dump Dan Rather.

I caught a glimpse of Rather on the news this evening, and no word was mentioned about the issue. I guess they figure if they keep a low profile it'll go away...

I hope TeamBush is wise enough to learn from Kerry's mistakes. They should leave this story alone. Let the media sharks devour their own and the campaign itself should stay above the fray.

No way! They've tried that approach and all that's fired back from the Kerry side is how Bush is using dirty tactics. All the while upping the anty with their own. It's like the tattle-tale approach of kindergartener's. They put all the focus on Bush playing dirty so their own tactics go unnoticed.

Can't agree here, though I'll admit I'd enjoy few things more than a major bloodletting over this--Think back about how foolish and whiny and "doth protest too much" Dear John looked when he was out there wailing about how W was behind SBVT?--Most un-presidential--I think W will stay above it all and let Kerry wiggle and squirm meanwhile he'll just go right on being the President--

Now that it's looking more and more that these really are forgeries, the mainstream press, no matter how left-leaning, will smell blood in the water and none of them will want to let the others trump them on the story--Just like the Monica story, it's just too big for them to think it'll just go away--They'll all go after Kerry and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them will take great pleasure in taking that weasel Rather down, too--

I don't think we have to worry about Kerry and his minions getting trounced big time over this and W won't have to dirty his hands for it to happen--

Oh sweet irony!!--C

The experts also raised questions about the military's typewriter technology three decades ago. Collins said word processors that could produce proportional-sized fonts cost upwards of $20,000 at the time.

Actually in just after '74 Xerox machines with a ball type 'writer' 7˝ inch floppy drives, and 8088 main cpu ran around $36k. The primary market for these was legal offices.
Prying the machines away from lawyers, upgrading the machines and attempting to transfer data to newer machines went on for a good 15 years.
I've thrown many of theses in the dump. About a month ago i saw one still in use, and it made my stomach churn. Confused

Washington Prowler
Anatomy of a Forgery
http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=7096
By The Prowler
Published 9/10/2004 12:09:06 AM

More than six weeks ago, an opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee received documents purportedly written by President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian.

The oppo researcher claimed the source was "a retired military officer." According to a DNC staffer, the documents were seen by both senior staff members at the DNC, as well as the Kerry campaign.

"More than a couple people heard about the papers," says the DNC staffer. "I've heard that they ended up with the Kerry campaign, for them to decide to how to proceed, and presumably they were handed over to 60 Minutes, which used them the other night. But I know this much. When there was discussion here, there were doubts raised about their authenticity."

The concerns arose from the sourcing. "It wasn't clear that our source for the documents would have had access to them. Our person couldn't confirm from what file, from what original source they came from."

The documents that CBS News used were not documents from any of Bush's personnel files from his time in the National Guard. Rather, CBS News stated that they were documents uncovered in the personnel files of Killian. That would explain why the White House or the Pentagon had never before released or even seen them.

According to a Kerry campaign source, there was little gossip about the supposedly hot documents inside the office of the campaign on McPherson Square. "Those documents were not something anyone was talking about or trying to generate buzz on," says the staffer. "It wasn't like there were small groups of people talking about this as a bombshell. I think people here weren't sure what to make of it, because provenance of these documents was uncertain."

A CBS producer, who initially tipped off The Prowler about the 60 Minutes story, says that despite seeking professional assurances that the documents were legitimate, there was uncertainty even among the group of producers and researchers working on the story.

"The problem was we had one set of documents from Bush's file that had Killian calling Bush 'an exceptionally fine young officer and pilot.' And someone who Killian said 'performed in an outstanding manner.' Then you have these new documents and the tone and content are so different."

The CBS producer said that some alarms bells went off last week when the signatures and initials of Killian on the documents in hand did not match up with other documents available on the public record, but producers chose to move ahead with the story. "This was too hot not to push. If there were doubts, those people didn't show it," says the producer, who works on a rival CBS News program.

Now, the producer says, there is growing concern inside the building on 57th Street that they may have been suckered by the Kerry campaign. "There is a school of thought here that the Kerry people dumped this in our laps, figuring we'd do the heavy lifting on the story. That maybe they had doubts about these documents but hoped we'd get more information," says the producer. "If that's the case, then we're bigger fools than we already appear to be judging by all the chatter about how these documents could be forgeries."

ABC News' political unit held a conference call at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening to discuss the memo and its potential ramifications should the documents turn out to be a forgery. That meeting took place around the time that the deceased Killian's son made public statements questioning the documents' authenticity.

According to one ABC News employee, some reporters believe that the Kerry campaign as well as the DNC were parties in duping CBS, but a smaller segment believe that both the DNC and the Kerry campaign were duped by Karl Rove, who would have engineered the flap to embarrass the opposition.

Graphical Overlay of MAY 19, 1972 Forgery

Here's a link to an animate .gif I did using the CBS May 19, '1972' document and a modern MS Word version done yesterday using nothing but default settings. The two files were printed, re-scanned and overlayed in Photoshop. The MS Word version was scaled and rotated to match the CBS document. The New version was also skewed by a small amount to match the skew produced through multiple photocopier passes.

No changes were made to either document that affected the spacing between characters, words, lines or paragraphs.

Here it is: www.jimroofcreative.com/may19.gif

Check it out. Looks pretty darned conclusive to me.

Agreed....I started this without realizing the other thread was talking about the same thing....I was really thinking I was Johnny on the Ball, then I figured out the 21 pages of the other thread was doing the same thing....now something like 40 pages.

This one is a little easier to wad through...but the story is done now....there is no debate the Memo are fakes.

Only concern is next fakes will have a blue print to make perfect forges
