No problem, TruckSTR; you qualify, plus I'm interested in ALL vets' reaction to Kerry's mockery of Iwo Jima. Semper Fi!

John Kerry has several books, but not this book. I have called Barnes and Noble, described the cover and they do not know of this book,

A Call to Service: My Vision for a Better America by John Kerry is available for sale.

Please advise as to where this book can be purchased.

The last one I saw for sale was on E-Bya for something around $800.

There are 2 copies here in the Anchorage library. Idea

You're going up that old Egyptian river, FALSE108. That is Kerry's book; I'll get you the info if you want, but you can see practically the whole thing at www.wintersoldier.com. See his name above the photo? That IS his book, your ignorance notwithstanding, and as far I'm concerned - and every Marine I've shown it to - Kerry and his real "band of brothers" was mocking the Iwo Jima memorial. Open your eyes and earn your name; right now your huge lack of knowledge is making you look foolish. Thatisall ....

First, to qualify myself... as the grandson of a WWII Pacific theater small boat pilot, the son of a Marine Vietnam veteran, the husband of a Gulf War II veteran Navy Nurse and most importantly, a Marine veteran myself (now seeking a commission in the Navy... yeah, yeah, I know... the Navy!?) here's my opinion, for what it's worth...

The image in question is par for the course and what I've come to expect from a political agenda so consumed with hatred that nothing is sacred. Maybe it's because I am younger than many of the Vets here... maybe it's my generation... but I'm not shocked. Angry? Sure, but I can't afford to get too angry or I'd never be able to function. This is the left's idea of modern politics. My great fear is that, as it did in the Vietnam generation, the left's low budget philosophies will be embraced by the wider culture via its traditional outlets of media and entertainment. This is why I thoroughly embrace the words of Col. Mike Wyly who said, "It is no longer enough for Marines to reflect the society they defend. They must lead it, not politically but culturally. For it is the culture we are defending". In the end, the only thing I can really do about John Kerry is vote against him. Unfortunately, or perhaps not, popular culture is not a democracy. If Marines and our brothers and sisters in arms from the other services lead from the front we can strive for a cultural revolution that will guarantee that those like John Kerry will rightly feel their shame instead of coming to power (be it the Senate or *shudder* the White House) inspite of their sins and on the backs of those they've sinned against. There is a culture gap widening between the military and those we have sworn to protect. Closing it means we must all surrender our sense of elitism and mingle again amongst the civilians. Get involved, talk to children write a book or a song or a screen play. Do anything you can because, though it seems our culture's moral compass may be turning, there's always a Michael Moore or Madonna out there ready to exploit our most cherished freedoms, traditions and accomplishments in order to promote their agenda. This image is the tip of an iceberg and small potatos to the media elites who are hard wired into pop-culture. We'll see alot more before this is through.

That's my 2 cents...

How does it feel to be caught in a lie. Just because it's out of print and Kerry won't allow any more to be printed (for obvious reasons) don't think it was not written and published.

Quote:
The dust-jacket of Kerry's book, "The New Soldier," features a photograph of Vietnam veterans carrying an upside-down American flag.

True. The cover of "The New Soldier," an out-of-print collection of speeches by John Kerry and other members of Vietnam Veterans Against the War edited by David Thorne and George Butler, consisted mainly of a photo of a half-dozen bearded protesters, some of whom were carrying an inverted U.S. flag. It's a safe bet the image was selected (by whom we don't know) because of its provocative resemblance to the Marine Corps War Memorial. Whether or not it constituted a mockery of that memorial, however, not to mention a desecration of the flag, is an open question. According to the U.S. Flag Code, the flag can legitimately be displayed "union down" as a distress signal, which is arguably just the symbolic meaning the protesters intended.

The only time a flag can be flown upside down. To use on a book does not apply.

Quote:
The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

Thanks, xsquid. This is the first time I've heard an explanation outside of wintersoldier.com. My opinion differs from theirs a little: me, and every Marine I've shown this to, thinks that it is indeed a mockery of the Iwo Jima memorial. Maybe us Marines are just a little too touchy ..... Naaah!

Armorer: Welcome aboard, Marine, and well said. I hope you get that commission, even if it is with the squids! Semper Fi!

An update Walt;

I passed this on to my daughter and she's shown it to everyone she has an email address to at Camp Pendleton. Here's hoping the young salts understand the gall.

I just got my copy of "The New Soldier" and it appears that the parallel between the famous Iwo Jima photo was not lost on one of the attendees:

Quote:
It was Thursday night, after the candlelight march, when the guys came back and were on the stage with the flag. There was this spontaneous feeling of pride. I sort of drew a parallel with Iwo Jima. I guess you had to, because it was with the same type of pride that they put up the flag in Iwo Jima. And when that was done—instead of burning the flag, they took it and they folded it up because as Phil Lavoie, one of the vets with the flag said, “We love America, we’re not here to destroy it.:

Nope, us "squids" are with you "jarheads" Very Happy on the idea of mocking the iwo Jima monument. If you look at the only reason the flag can be flown upside down this is clearly a mockery.
