Dear Dan Rather,
Hell hath no fury like a Swiftee scorned.
You always have time for Castro, Hussein and any anti Bush author (usually associated with Simon and Schuster, owned by the same parent company as CBS), but outright refuse to interview O'Neill and the SBVT. Why is that?
Needless to say, the documentation and testimony of the SBVT is fully vetted, so you can rest assured that there will be no embarassing replay of this ANG forgery debacle!
Of course, we are probably witnessing the end of your career, since as managing news editor, you are fully responsible for making sure this story was true before putting it before the public, so we will have to see what your successor does.
I guess your partisan zeal blinded you to the truth, truth that the honorable souls of the SBVT were able to deconstruct in a day, without the huge resources of CBS. Just our computers and experience.
Have a nice day, Dan. I have the feeling it is going to be a long one.
Sincerely,
Your "friends" in the SBVT _________________ Everytime he had a choice, Kerry chose to side with communists rather than the United States. |

Good point.
I figured if you want to properly forge a doc without period equipment, you would make something as close to typewriter as possible, and then age it with mechanical means mentioned in other posts (such as multiple passes thru a copier). If you age it with photoshop, it will leave digital telltales.
As I recall, a well-maintained typewriter or daisywheel, using film ribbons, made BETTER, CRISPER output than a 300 DPI Laser Printer. So if one wanted to mechanically age high-quality typewriter output, one would want to eliminate as many telltales in the original print as possible, ergo, a high-res laser printer.
However, if emulating a dirty typewriter with a worn-out nylon ink ribbon (probably more likely situation for a National Guard typewriter), yer right-on... Inkjet printer on cheap copier paper (to get some 'ink bleed'). |

JCJR,
The documents were given to us as PDFs. Even if there are originals that have been manipulated with PhotoShop, we wouldn't be able to detect any artifacts because all we have is the PDF.
Create the document. Scan it. Manipulate it in PhotoShop or some other image editing software. Print it. Deliver printout. Who can detect manipulation from printout?
Also, current laser printers are 600 DPI or greater. I'm using one from 10 or 11 years ago and it's 600 DPI. It's crisper than a typewriter. If someone had an old LaserJet II (300 DPI, no resolution enhancement technology) or LaserJet III (300 DPI, RET), that might not be crisper, but I wouldn't bet on it. |
