Swift Boat Group Has Raised $6.7 Million From 53,000 Donors
Its third ad, which it takes national, attacks Kerry as discarding combat medals.
By Lisa Getter, Times Staff Writer
September 11, 2004

WASHINGTON — Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the conservative group that has attacked Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John F. Kerry's Vietnam record, has raised $6.7 million from more than 53,000 donors in recent weeks, the group said Friday.

<snip>

The group, which has strong Republican ties, has accused Kerry of misrepresenting his actions in Vietnam and betraying his fellow veterans by coming out against the war after he left the Navy.

Though the allegations have not been substantiated, the ads have had an impact on the presidential campaign.

<snip>

McCain has denounced the Swift Boat campaign.

I still say McCain needs to retract his "dishonest and dishonorable" statement.

I also admire the chutzpah on "strong Republican ties" when the LA Times' and CBS News' ties to the Kerry campaign are way stronger, and on "the allegations are not substantiated" when the "allegations" are Kerry's own words and actions in the public record.

So everyone here should write McCain and tell him so.

I'm going to his website right now. How about you?

This is what I posted to his comments page.
Quote:
I am extremely disappointed in your stance on the Swiftvets. Without even bothering to check if their story is true, you denounced them publicly as "dishonorable and dishonest". As a veteran of the Vietnam era and a fellow Navy vet, I'm embarassed to admit that you and I served in the same branch. The officers I knew at least would have the decency to check the facts before denouncing fellow officers.

I respectfully request that you purchase a copy of Unfit for Command and READ it carefully. If, after you have considered the Swiftvets' case, you still feel they are dishonorable and dishonest, then you have every right to say so in the National media.

I personally have carefully researched their story. I began with disgust and disbelief, but as I uncovered confirmation of more and more of their story, I became convinced that these men are being honest and sincere and they are RIGHT!

You have a powerful influence in this campaign and in this country. As a former Naval officer you have a duty to speak the truth and serve this country with the dignity and honor that Naval officers have always upheld. I IMPLORE you to read the book so you can base your future statements on an HONEST evaluation of the facts.

If you do not, then I can assure you that your political future is in danger. Many eyes are watching you. Vietnam vets are becoming politically active for the first time in their lives, and they will remember who stood for the truth and who did not.

Will you go now and write to the Senator?

Well it might be a bit of an assumption that we are voting Republican.

Just because Dan Rather held hands with democratic hacks and spoke at their fund raisers.

The Press doesn;t want to work that hard and certainly not verify anything John Kerry said.

You can email the Times staff writer at lisa.getter@latimes.com

Ask her how can "the claims be unsubstantiated" when the third video features Kerry on film saying he tossed the medals?

An other example of liberal media bias.

You know, I'm beginning to think that it's not just a "liberal media bias", but more of a laziness that has invaded the journalistic arena.

Everyone is so competitive about getting their name and face before the cameras or on the front page that they don't even bother to check their facts.........and because they know if they are wrong, they won't have to account for it. After all, where do we find retractions, if any?

I did send e-mail to this "reporter" and suggested that she do more research for her stories instead of just reading her fellow "reporters" stories to base hers on.

I quit reading magazines, newspapers and watching all the Datelines, 60 minutes, etc. right after 9/11. I found it offensive the way the reporters were trying to ride the grief of others to stardom. Looks like Dan Rather might have rode that story right into the ground, face first.

Yeh.

The vaunted MSM (a.k.a. Fogosphere) has been reduced to counting beans. Not to issuing substantive debate or rebuttal to important issues, but to counting beans. And spinning the counts as well.

It's really pathetic. I feel sorry for these people, many of whom in the near future will need to register for unemployment due to "planned obsolesence."

Texas oilmen are biggest backers of anti-Kerry ad push
Among the main donors to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens, a report shows

By Meg Laughlin and Tom Infield
Inquirer Staff Writers

WASHINGTON - Texas oilmen, led by takeover specialist T. Boone Pickens, helped fuel the anti-Kerry advertising campaign of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a report filed yesterday shows.

Pickens contributed $500,000 to the group, the report said. A second oilman from Dallas, Albert Huddleston, contributed $100,000.

The group, whose attacks on the war record of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry have attracted national attention, claims it has raised $6.7 million but portrays itself as a grass-roots effort thriving on small contributions.

"The average contribution to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is $65," Weymouth Symmes, the group's treasurer, said earlier this week.

The report filed with the Federal Elections Commission yesterday detailed 683 contributions totaling just over $1.9 million, none of them less than $100. Federal law requires organizations such as the veterans group to show how they've paid for advertising within 24 hours of the ads' airing on television.

The group reported that it spent more than $700,000 to buy time for an anti-Kerry commercial now running on national cable television and paid for it with the contributions listed.

Pickens, 75, the founder of Mesa Petroleum, the largest independent oil and gas producer in the United States, made the largest contribution. A major Republican donor, he's previously supported both Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush.

Huddleston, 51, also is a major Republican donor. The chief executive of Hyperion Resources Inc., an oil and gas company, he raised at least $100,000 for Bush's 2000 campaign. He's also a heavy donor to Republican candidates in Texas, giving $704,500 in 2002, according to the nonpartisan group Follow the Money, which monitors Texas political contributions. Follow the Money said Huddleston also gave $68,000 to Texas Democrats that same year.

Mike Russell, who works for the Washington-area public relations firm Creative Response Concepts, which represents the Swift boat group, declined yesterday to discuss how Pickens or Huddleston had come to donate to the anti-Kerry effort.

"I'm not going to comment on any of our major donors," Russell said. "We're just not going to say anything other than we appreciate the support of major donors and minor donors. We appreciation donations of all kinds."

Russell said Swift Boat Veterans for Truth had received donations from 53,000 people, most of whom had contributed through the group's Web site. On Thursday alone, he said, 2,681 people had given $82,405.

"Like any organization, we have major donors and small contributors. I think the important thing is we have taken in a huge amount of grass-roots support."

A fuller accounting of the group's contributions is due in October.

This is probably the most biased reporting I've seen so far about who has donated. It "conveniently" makes the uninformed reader think Mr. Symmes is not being upfront with his $64 figure. Just time and time again, we get hosed on this kind of stuff. So frustrating! Evil or Very Mad

So, they focus on the top 12% of the contributors and ignore the rest of the 53,000 who have chipped in?

What a load of crap!

The Philadelphia Inquirer is, and has been, a liberal rag better for nothing more than lining the bottom of a bird cage or a cat's litter box. when I lived up there, I never read that paper. In their reporting and editorials (in truth, no difference), they were as predictable as the sun rising every day. Lazy, intellectually challenged, incredibly biased. THEY should be registered as a Dem 527.....
