Do you think CA and NY are considered liberal areas due to the NY and LA Times influence on the population or the other way around, The people are already liberal and the papers just reflect the population?

Liberal media reinforce liberal attitudes and people with liberal attitudes buy liberal media. So it is circular. While the LA Times is very far left on many things, much of Southern California is quite conservative. You get out of LA County, and Los Angeles in particular, and you encounter different attitudes.

I have lived in California for a total of 22 years, and the political culture is generally dominated by the two metropolitan areas, that are in turn largely run by liberal political machines. Just as upstate New York is different from New York City, other parts of California are different from the two metropolitan areas. But the power lies in the large cities. Thank god we have the electoral college built into our constitution.
