According to this website, CBS is in violation of the McCain Feingold Campaign Reform Law by virtue of its 60 minutes show with fraudulent documents. Below is the letter this group plans to send to the FEC. To sign their petition, go to:

Quote:
Commissioners
Federal Election Commission
999 E Street, NW
Washington, DC 20463

Dear Commissioners:

Under the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (“BCRA” or “McCain-Feingold Law”), corporations are prohibited from broadcasting “electioneering communications” within 60 days of a general election. For this election cycle, after September 2, 2004, broadcasts that mention a clearly identified candidate are prohibited.

BCRA includes a “media exemption” that permits legitimate news outlets to broadcast news. However, that exception itself has limits.

A multinational corporation operating under a media exemption cannot knowingly broadcast fraudulent information about a federal candidate while hiding behind the media exception.

Similarly, a multinational corporation cannot coordinate its attacks on one candidate with another candidate’s campaign while hiding behind the media exemption.

In the days since September 2, CBS/Viacom, a multi-billion dollar international corporation, has been broadcasting millions of dollars worth of fraudulent electioneering communications against President George W. Bush.

Moreover, these electioneering communications appear to be coordinated with the presidential campaign of Senator John Kerry.

On September 8, on its program “60 Minutes,” CBS/Viacom broadcast obviously fraudulent documents smearing President Bush in ways that mirror attacks by the Kerry campaign.

Again on September 10, on the “CBS Evening News with Dan Rather,” CBS/Viacom again broadcast these fraudulent documents. Each of these broadcasts reached more than 10 million Americans.

These electioneering communications are violations of federal law by CBS/Viacom and fall directly under your purview.

• According to your records, Viacom and its executives have given more than $1 million this election cycle, with more than 3/4 of it going to the Democrats.
• In addition, an article posted on the Dallas Morning News website on September 10, 2004 reported that earlier this year, “Kerry aides raised the exact points the [CBS anti-Bush memo] seemed to address.”
• Moreover, Dan Rather’s pro-Democratic advocacy has been well-known and documented for more than two decades.
• The bogus elements of the documents have been extensively detailed by leading newspapers and TV news networks, including problems with spacing, centering, kerning, superscript, and the fact that a commander referred to in one of the documents had retired more than a year before the date of the phony document that cites him.

You must not sit idly by while a corporation hides behind its so-called media exemption to smear a candidate for federal office less than 60 days before the general election.

While we believe this entire section of the McCain-Feingold Law, among many others, is an affront to the first amendment to the Constitution, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld this provision. As such, it is the law of the land.

We call on you to launch an immediate investigation of CBS/Viacom and to use your legal powers to force CBS/Viacom to stop violating federal law at once. Your credibility, and the integrity of our democratic system, is at stake.

Many Americans from all walks of life are joining us in this petition. We will send you updated lists of these individuals in the days ahead.

Joined and also e-mailed my Congressman, who happens to be a Republican member of the House Judiciary Committee--

I do think, however, that the petition could also stand to mention the point that the main figure in the same story is well-known to be an open operative for the Kerry campaign--That, coupled with the fraudulent documents and the recent history of blatantly anti-Bush segments further taints this "story" to the point of incredulity--C
