First, do you have an Adobe Acrobat Reader installed?

If not then that would be the reason.

Actually the way Google AdWords work is that the merchant makes the ad (or several) to come up when specified keywords appear on a page where the owner of that page has inserted the Google AdWord code. It is the owner of the page that gets the small commission, the advertiser (in this case it would appear to have to be Amazon) is charged for the add on a per click through basis. I can't see, in this instance, where a 3rd party could possibly benifit from placing this ad. This appears to be the handywork of one of Amazon's copywriters.

Amazon affiliates can simply add a referral code to the Amazon URL and they will get a piece of the sale, if you buy.

I haven't seen the ad, but it sounds as if they are violating one of the Google Adword editorial guidelines:

Quote:

Identify Affiliate Status

If you are an affiliate and are paid to send traffic to another site or a distributor, you must identify yourself as an affiliate or a distributor in your ad text.

Example:
Insert the word "affiliate" or "distributor" in your ad text or title.

If so, let Google know about it and the owner will have to correct it.

The rule on the display URL (not the actual target when you click) isn't exactly clear whether using someone else's URL is OK:

Quote:

Display URL Must be Accurate

Your Display URL must accurately reflect the URL of your website. If your actual destination URL link is too long for your ad, use a shortened version (such as your homepage) that meets the character limit for this field.
The Display URL field cannot be used as another line of ad text.
Your Display URL must include the domain extension, for example: .com, .net, or .org.

Example:
Destination URL: http://www.shoesforsale.com/ladiesshoes/highheels.html
Display URL: www.shoesforsale.com

GeorgiaBoy,

There are two issues here we shouldn't confuse. You're right that the third-party paid Google for the placement. It's also clear from the URLs used that the third-party passes its amazon associates referral code through to Amazon in order to get credit (you need to right-click and get Properties to see the URLs actually traversed on the way to Amazon). I own an Internet company which does a lot of this (mostly via Yahoo, but same principle), I'm familiar with Google's and Amazon's programs, and the redirect URLs clearly indicated the ad was_not_written_or_placed_by_Amazon.

Again, try the experiment I describe above on Google. I found at least FOUR different companies doing the same thing before I got bored... There are dozens of companies trying to make a few easy bucks redirecting people to bestsellers. This one just used particularly annoying language (for us Swiftee supporters). If I can find the ad again, I'll copy down the URL so we can complain to the specific company (and Wily is right about Google's guidelines).

On the other hand... converting a few liberals might be worth it!
