That is a big bag of $$$$$

http://defeatjohnjohn.com/pageone.htm

and here is the typewriter that can do it right?

IBM Selectric Composer (bidding at $202.50)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41816&item=3839419995&rd=1

not a bad investment for almost 38 grand. right?

BUT before you go blow your couple hundred, better check this first.

And that typewriter has the number 1! Didn't the expert on CBS last night say that the memos used the lower case "L" as #1s?

Yes, you are referring to their new expert:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/06/politics/main641481.shtml

Richard Katz, a software designer, found some other indications in the documents. He noted that the letter "L" is used in those documents, instead of the numeral "one." That would be difficult to reproduce on a computer today

Yeah, right, Rich. It would be awfully difficult for a computer to produce the letter 'l'. Rolling Eyes

dcrhere,

The el/one thing is been debunked by Newcomer at www.flounder.com. He typed a string of ones and a string of els and proved that ones were used, not els.

Yeah, right, we are to believe that the fancy schmancy typing machine Col Killian was so proficient at, that had Word Times New Roman, a least 10 letter widths, and superscripting, did not have a numeral "1" key!

Here's the deal..when you use "els" instead of "ones" together, the spacing/kerning is different.

Look:

111 (3 ones no spaces)
lll (3 "els" no spaces)

The multiple copying and compression in the docs has sort of smeared a lot of the serifs on the font. "cropping some off entirely, blurring baselines together, etc). But, the spacing/kerning and leading is still quite obvious.

I should add,, that is unless you are using nonproportional font spacing.
In which case, if they wan't to maintain that..ie the "ones" are "els"..that means they are saying it was done on the lowerend models that didn't proportional spacing.

If that's the case, part of the document was typed with a state of the art machine for the superscript, etc..then..switched typewriters to an older model to type the "ones" as "els". hahaha.
