The state Republican Party has launched another campaign ad targeting Democratic Supreme Court Justice Warren McGraw. The ad features remarks made by McGraw during the United Mine Workers of American annual Labor Day picnic in Racine.
During those remarks, McGraw became enraged at some of his Republican opponents. He claimed to the crowd that many of his opponents, particularly members of the West Virginia Coal Association, were following him and taking pictures. McGraw ranted during the address that the pictures were taken to deliberately make him look "ugly" in campaign ads.
Gary Abernathy, executive director of the state Republican Party, says one of the campaign issues in the election is McGraw's behavior. He calls the justice's remarks "bizarre" and "off the wall." He says their only regret is that they cannot buy six or seven minute blocks of time to play the remarks in their entirety.
Critics believe using the statements made by the candidate himself in an ad against him is dirty pool. Abernathy disagrees. Speaking on MetroNews' "Talkline," Abernathy says one of the defense lines he's heard to the tirade is "That's how you connect to southern West Virginia voters." Abernathy says such a statement is an insult to residents of those southern counties and McGraw's demeanor in front of a campaign rally speaks to his demeanor on the high court as well. |
