As a teacher, let me give you some options:
1. You have the right to demand an education for your child that meets the highest standards of your state and country. Print out the state standards of your student's grade level and ask the principal and/or the teacher where this comment fits in to the highest educational standards.
2. It's impossible to be free of opinions as a teacher, however a teacher's role is to help students discover their own ideas, beliefs, and attitudes based on evidence. What evidence has been presented to the students to examine and think about? You have the right to demand that no political statements be made in the classroom. This is an abuse of power. There is nothing wrong with expressing one's opinion as a teacher but using the power of authority and grade holder to influence political attitudes is a disgrace to the profession.
3. Bottom line, this teacher owes your daughter an apology for not being professional and presenting information that is highly inflammatory, controversial and in dispute.
4. Ask for another teacher, switch classes, perhaps she can attend a junior college for this class if no other teacher is available.
5. Tell the Principal you would like to come observe the classroom. The public schools serve you-the public. Teachers get away with this because students don't want to be embarrassed and parents don't want their child targeted. You have more power than you think.
6. Find out from your district the regulations for political speech in the classroom. Have all your documentation before you talk to the principal.
7. Confront the Administration with a positive and problem solving approach...Don't make accusations, ask questions that will lead them to realize that there has been a wrong done.
8. The teacher is representing the school and the district while on the clock. Ask the principle if the official policy at this school and district is that the Swift Boat Vets are liars and Mr. Kerry is a Hero?
9. Follow through. The ball will be dropped if they think you are not persistent.
Good luck
Your daughter deserves the best teacher with the best teaching practices.
If this is just the first month of school, don't you think this teacher will continue to opine if not confronted?

We are giving away a nineteen-page monograph, with photos, to PROTEST the attack on Vietnam veterans by CBS Evening News on Tuesday, May 5, 2004 (“Republican plot,” “handpicked by Nixon”). IN ADDITION WE URGE YOU TO JOIN US IN TURNING OFF CBS EVENING NEWS.
Compiled not long ago as a history of our battles with other CBS “dirty tricks” from 1971 to 1986, the monograph is an account involving the media, the university, and the Vietnam veteran during the first years of our organization Vietnam Veterans for Academic Reform, at that time called University Liberation. To receive a free copy of this monograph, please send your name and mailing address to Magruder44@aol.com, or you can click here and read the monograph online. |

Homeschooling isn't a practical option for all
families as it generally requires someone to
stay home and it's also a lot of work but it has
advantage in the flexibility to pick and choose
your own materials. And also to do things like

My brother-in-law is a bold man. He is a 30 year plus educator from Michigan. I know of his political beliefs and I share lots of my SwiftVet stuff with him. The other night I menetioned in an email that I bet he didn't talk about these things in the teacher's lounge.
He replied back, "Sure, I talk about these things. I am not afraid to offend."
Good man that brother-in-law of mine.

Lots of good advice, pneal. I can just add that your daughter hasn't seen anything yet. If she attends 99% of our colleges, she will feel as if she is under constant attack for any conservative view she holds. I have 5 kids, 3 graduated, tow to go. The only one that escaped the onslaught was the one that attended West Point. I told the others to go to small, Christian schools...
In grad school I was given a C minus for a research paper I wrote about the Sandinista government and Carter and Congress' funding of this virulently anti-American, Communist regime. I appealed to the Dean of Students, it created a huge uproar, and I was eventually given an "A" There was nothing wrong with the paper except that it challenged the profs beliefs. The ground was littered with bodies by the time that flap was over, but since none of the bodies were mine, I enjoyed every minute of it.
Your daughter needs you to show her how to effectively hold her ground. This is only the beginning, and you have been given a great opportunity to not only show your daughter how to stand up for her opinion, but to educate other parents that may not agree with this teacher's tactics about what is going on in our Government Schools.
It's a gift, run with it! And good luck! |

Are there are Swift Boat Vets in that area? You might want to invite one or several to your school and have them speak to her class.

There are some wild generalizations on this thread about teachers and educational institutions. This is the method used in some political campaigns; smear people as a group. I hope posters on this site can see the difference between sweeping gneralizations and personal experience.
As for the teacher, my recommendation is to talk to the super or asst super of the school district about this. By doing that your complaint will very likely be dealt with swiftly, and permantly. And, you will be removing the personalities (teacher, principal) who could adversely affect your daughter's education and grade from the situation. |

I would help her look up some of the attrocities Kerry and his friends claim to have commited, print them, and ask the teacher why she should vote for a war criminal.
Look at www.stolenvalor.com
Print off the treasonous events in concert with the N. Vietnamese in Paris, and ask the teacher to explain them.
for the Coup d'gras go to these sites, where the Dems have sponsored bills for reinstitution of draft. Print off the bills and sponsors. Ask the teacher why the Dems are laying the groundwork for the draft.

http://www.congress.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:S.89:
Is it because there is legitamate fear that the military will have to be 'forced to participate' under a traitorous, war criminal, that stabbed his fellows in the back.
Just dropping the paperwork about the draft in the classroom, will blow the shorts off that teacher. _________________ said Democratic Chairman Terry McAuliffe. "It is inexcusable to mock service and sacrifice."
well, when even the DNC can see it,,,,, then kerry is toast. |

Thanks to everyone who made thoughtful, and thought provoking, suggestions to us. We both feel strongly about not letting this teacher make his opinion be the last word on the subject in her class.
Jessica, like her brother before her, has always liked this teacher and chose to take this class simply due to his normally interesting and informative approach to a sometimes boring subject. I'm hoping that if we approach him in an non-accusatory manner with an offer to borrow our books and to check out this website, he will be compelled to do the research. As a teacher of World History and US Government, I feel certain that he would at least be curious what this group has to say about the historical, factual truth.
At the very least, to have an 18 yr. old student interested in anything beyond hair, make-up, boys and graduation day, he should make the effort to hear her information. They, the kids, say he's a fair and very "cool" teacher. We will see! The plan is to talk with him and offer the information. If he is receptive, and will at least hear your side of the story, we will be satisfied. He will know that a student in his class was affected by his opinionated words and maybe he dodged a formal complaint from a concerned parent. He might not be so quick to make a statement and then not encourage a discussion of that statement.
On the other hand, if he is not receptive and is the least bit confrontational, we plan to seek a meeting with him , the principal and the superintendent about his misuse of power. It's clear to us that Jessica's right to "all" the information possible, about the Vietnam War, was certainly not observed here.
Thanks again for allowing us to be a small part of this noble effort. Buy and distribute the SINK KERRY SWIFTLY bumper stickers! We ordered 100 from Tom and have begun to pass them out in exchange for donations to the Swiftboat Veterans. Anyone that wants just a few, drop me a line and I'll try to get them to you, but be sure you donate. They still need our help.
We BELIEVE and want to help others KNOW the truth, too! God Bless You! _________________ Born on the Fourth of July |

That is a very thoughtful approach, and I hope if this teacher is truly interested in being a role model for fair minded civil discourse he will take your comments as they are intended. You might start the conversation by say how Jessica has been looking forward to his class because of his fair and cool reputation. That will hopefully deflect a negative, defensive reaction. And I'm sure that if he is genuine he will reflect on how powerful his words are with a captive audience. Might I also say that Jessica seems like a tremendously thoughtful, bright and clever problem-solver. She is already a leader. I would be proud to have a Jessica like this in my class. Good luck. _________________ __________________________

I should also add that your daughter will be faced with much moore (pun intended) in her future So maybe now is the time to start fighting! _________________ ATACKM

Since it is early, I might try to transfer out. This a great learning experience for college. In order to pass, one generally has to compromise their position. Then you have the insult of paying back your student loans for learning or listening to their garbage. Most parents would have a fit if they knew what really went on. |
