Driving home just now, I was listening to ABC News on the radio - and in between two other stories, the reporter says the Navy has validated that John Kerry's medals were correctly issued.

Hello?

Details?

Anyone else hear this? Is this new news or old news?

Admin note: In light of now confirmed developments, I've edited the title. Thanks

No, I've seen that news story. This was different.

The reporter a half hour ago said the Navy had CONFIRMED that John Kerry's medals were CORRECTLY awarded to him. That's news, big news to this site. I've not seen any other reference to it on the web, although it might have just been announced.

Navy Rejects Probe of Kerry's War Medals
Reuters

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy has rejected a legal watchdog group's request to open an investigation into military awards given to Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry during the Vietnam War, saying his medals were properly approved.
"Our examination found that existing documentation regarding the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart medals indicates the awards approval process was properly followed," the Navy's inspector general, Vice Admiral Ronald Route, said in a memo written to Navy Secretary Gordon England.

"In particular, the senior officers who awarded the medals were properly delegated authority to do so. In addition we found that they correctly followed the procedures in place at the time for approving these awards."

In rejecting the request for an investigation made by Judicial Watch last month, Route said that "conducting any additional review regarding events that took place over thirty years ago would not be productive."

Kerry has been criticized by a group of Vietnam veterans called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, about whether he earned the decorations Kerry's campaign has touted during his campaign for the presidency.

Pretty much what I expected, except that I didn't think the Navy would come out with ANY statement until after the election.

Procedurally correct.

Rather funny, the attempt to connect Swifts to this action by judicialwatch.org.

Wow...interesting.

John Lehman's signature anyone?

3 DIFFERENT copies of the Silver Star citation?

Combat V?

Lots of questions left unanswered. And coming out with this on a Friday night. Looks like they wanted to drop this hot potato.

This is too political for the Navy Brass. They would not want to risk angering the man who could become their next CIC. Especially after their experience with Clinton.
Not that they wouldn't love to flush John, but they have to protect their service first.
The military is inherently conservative and doesn't like to get involved in politics.

also, saw something else on here about Savage and Limbaugh being shut

up back in mid 80's.... it had to do with Kerry and Harkin going to south america

and the guy who investigated sosmeone else's medals - wrote a book on it...????

Basically, correct Naval Procedures were followed. It makes NO judgement on whether the process was corrupted at the start by an injection of fraudulent report(s). It does seem odd, however, that they were reluctant to even comment on the "V" device for the SS.

Basically, the IG has sent a MEMO to SecNav with his recommendations.

(interesting that the memo leaked, since it was internal)

SecNav is the cognizant authority, and he will probably concur with the recommendation -- but not until after the election -- by direction from the President. I don't see President Bush having anything to gain by opening this can of worms at this time, however, I do see an advantage for keeping him on pins-and-needles waiting on the statement from SecNav.

It would be interesting if SecNav issued a statement that they are in receipt of the Memo from the IG. I can think of the perfect one word response "Noted."

For those not familiar with the Navy jargon, this is as close as you can get (officially) to saying "Up yours." (actually, the REAL meaning is much more graphic, and not suitable for women or children to see in type).

There is another possiblity, one which requires that you believe President Bush is a brilliant strategist (or has one or two working for him).

By taking the medals issue COMPLETELY off the table, this removes a potential distractor from the arena.

This would imply he has MUCH bigger fish to fry than going after Kerry's stolen valor. It's already been exposed for what it is, and now it's time to move into the far MORE criminal acts of his later years, his stolen honor.

Of course, if you think Dubya is just a hayseed cowboy who talks funny, and hasn't got the brains God gave a goose, then you can just say he blew an opportunity to torpedo Kerry.
