To make this definitive, how many inputs were required other than Kerry's? Are SSs awarded for action over multiple days?

I'm still enamored with the SOP uncovered Mon which fits perfectly with the SwiftVets account of the SS action.

It seems to me that it still doesn't answer the question of where Adm Zumwalt got his information? It also speaks about events in general but I see no details of anyones specific heroic acts. Have I missed something?

Zumwalt says that 23 and 43 moved up river first and then came 94? But, the SS citation he signed clearly states that 23 and 94 went up river first and then they called for 43.

This account also conflicts with the one provided by Doug Reese earlier. He claimed that Kerry's RF/PF's were still on board his boat at the time.

There's also still no indication of any action that would justify a silver star.

I seem to remember that one boat was damaged on the 27th (the 23?) and was delayed in joining the group the next morning (28th).

Misty,

You're right that PCF-23 (under the command of Jack Chenowith) started the mission but was not participating in the early part of the 13 Mar 69 mission and joined the group as they cleared the area, but you're confusing events.

Chenowith (on PCF-23) had engine problems that they solved it time to start clearing the area with the other 4 boats prior to the mine going off under PCF-3. This happened on 13 Mar 69. The other 4 boats involved in the 13 Mar 69 incident were; Dick Pees (PCF-3), Dan Droz (PCF-43), Larry Thurlow (PCF-51), and Kerry (PCF-94).

On February 28th, the Silver Star day, Bill Rood and his crew were using PCF-23 and it was fine to go. That day it was Rood on PCF-23, Dan Droz on PCF-43, and Kerry on PCF-94.

Remember that often different crews used the same boat when a crew was "getting a rest day"

RF/PF is Regional Forces/Popular Forces (Vietnamese troops - our side) also nicknamed Ruff Puffs.

Those who looking at archival material should watch for any documents that deal with the issue of medals in general, particularly documents from Zumwalt urging commanders to recommend men for medals whenever possible.

Also watch for mention of Kerry's political plans by superior officers particularly Zumwalt. He might have been interested in helping Kerry get medals the way Gen. MacArthur helped a young Texas congressman named Lyndon Johnson get a silver star early in WWII.
