Wars are never pretty, and you have victories and setbacks. Clemenceau once called war "a series of catastrophes that results in a victory." But to hear it from Republican Sens. McCain, Lugar and Hagel, you'd think there's nothing but gloom and doom over in Iraq:
Quote: | Three influential Republican senators criticized mistakes in Bush's policy on Sunday and one, Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Richard Lugar of Indiana, cited "incompetence" in the U.S. failure to spend more money to reconstruct Iraq.
"The fact is, we're in deep trouble in Iraq ... and I think we're going to have to look at some recalibration of policy," Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska said on Sunday. | From http://news.myway.com/top/article/id/43119|top|09-21-2004::09:06|reuters.html.
And this poke in the eye from McCain:
Quote: | Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona said Bush was not being "as straight as maybe we'd like to see" with the American people about Iraq.
McCain, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on "Fox News Sunday" that it was "a serious mistake" not to have had enough troops in place "after the initial successes" and that the mistake had led to "very, very significant" difficulties.
"I think every day that goes by that we don't remove these sanctuaries in Falluja and other places in the Sunni Triangle, the more expensive it's going to be at the time we take this out," McCain said.
He said he "would never have allowed the sanctuaries to start with |

One of the strengths of the Republican Party used to be its ability not to launder any of its dirty linen in public. Even if these guys are right -- and I think there is room here for reasonable minds to differ -- they are playing right into the Kerry propaganda machine.
People here from Arizona, Indiana and Nebraska ought to email these senators and ask them if they want Kerry or Bush to win. Because right now all they're doing is aiding and abetting the Kerry enemy who would sell out every G.I. in Iraq in order to win this election. |
