COVERAGE OF THE SWIFT BOAT VET AD

From the Washington Post:
The meeting, however, was not a secret. Kerry, a leading antiwar activist at the time, mentioned it in testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in April of that year. "I have been to Paris," he testified. "I have talked with both delegations at the peace talks, that is to say the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and Provisional Revolutionary Government," the latter a South Vietnamese communist group with ties to the Viet Cong.

Kerry's campaign said earlier this year that he met on the trip with Nguyen Thi Binh, then foreign minister of the PRG and a top negotiator at the talks. Kerry acknowledged in that testimony that even going to the peace talks as a private citizen was at the "borderline" of what was permissible under U.S. law, which forbids citizens from negotiating treaties with foreign governments. But his campaign said he never engaged in negotiations or attended any formal sessions of the talks.

"This is more trash from a group that's doing the Bush campaign's dirty work," Kerry spokesman Chad Clanton said. "Their charges are as credible as a supermarket rag."

In an interview yesterday, John O'Neill, an organizer of the Swift boat group and co-author of the anti-Kerry book "Unfit for Command," said it would be "unprecedented" for a future commander in chief to have met with enemy leaders. "It would be like an American today meeting with the heads of al Qaeda," he said.

Thought One: Boy, another great, specific, detail-filled rebuttal from the Kerry campaign! Couldn't they have at least tried to argue that the Paris meeting was innocent, and try to describe what Kerry did at the meeting?

Thought Two: "It would be like an American today meeting with the heads of al Qaeda." Team Kerry better have a good defense to refute that talking point, because if that one sentence comparison breaks through the media static and gets into voter's heads, Kerry will make Walter Mondale look like Bill Clinton.

You are dead on with your second thought. Making a comparison to Al Qaeda is a great analogy and one that should be taken out of the James Carville playbook. Just keep saying it over and over and over. Emails to the MSM making the comparison would be good also.

This is soooo sweet! They can't stand it that President Bush is running a completely above-board campaign and that an independent, apolitical group, SBVT, is telling the truth about John Kerry. The Dems have tried to come out with something they thought would combat the effect of the SBVT's ads, namely the forged documents sent to CBS and look where it has gotten them!

TRUTH IS ALWAYS THE VICTOR

I thought that Kerry did secretly meet with the enemy in Paris. Admitting to it after the fact for some political advantage before the Senate does not change the fact that he did meet the enemy in secret, and did violate US law!

You are right. Kerry's statement uses the past tense of the verb. He had already been to Paris and broken the law.

This ad is POWERFUL. It has struck another blow to Kerry. The media
will not report it but look at the reaction from Camp Kerry. They put together Operation Favorite Son to smear Bush's wartime record in the
Guard. Why did they go after Bush? Because they can't go after the
Swiftvets who have decimated Kerry's attempt to portray himself the
Vietnam "Hero" who will save us. The book and the ads hurt Kerry, and
hurt him bad. Operation Favorite Son is now a fiasco since Rathergate
and now the fact that Joe Lockhart talked to Bill Burkett, the nutcase behind the fake memos. What was mentioned last night was the subject of the conversation between the Kerry Camp (Lockhart) and Burkett.
Burkett wanted to offer a way to counterattack the Swiftvets. Yes,
the Swiftvets, not Bush.

Here's a fact - Unfit For Command is still number one on the New York's
bestseller list for over four weeks and counting.

This ad demonstrates once again that Kerry has never been able to draw the line between legitimate criticism of our country's policies and betrayal of our country and those who serve. He has used betrayal over and over again, just as he is doing with the war in Iraq, solely for political gain. I would love to see an ad that makes the connection between Kerry's conduct in 1971 and his conduct now to demonstrate that his role both during and after his time in Vietnam is relevant to the election of 2004.

The first meeting in Paris was in 1970. He made a second trip to Paris in 1971. He could not do enough damage on one trip he had to go back and make sure he could he had all the Commie talking points.

In response to the latest Swift Boat Veterans' ad, some Kerry spinners (on "Special Report with Brit Hume on Fox) are trying to say that the meetings with Madame Binh were "fact-finding" to determine what they could offer, and that "lots of people were meeting with the North Vietnamese" at that time. How does SBVT counter that? Do we need O'Neill to explain this AGAIN on TV?
