I'm sure this has been discussed, but what was Rassman's job and mission when he hit the drink? Did every Swiftboat have one of him on board? Thanks

It was posted a while back and while I can't find the reference at this moment, I recall it something like this:

1. Rassman and his group were on board for a detail they did in a village which, I believe, resulted in one friendly KIA due to booby trap.

2. The boats were actually returning to base from that detail when the mine exploded.

One of the missions of the Swift Boats was to transport American, Vietnamese, etc. personnel to conduct various missions including looking for enemy concentrations and supply depots.

Rassman had been accompanied by some Nung mercenaries and had destroyed some enemy supplies. Kerry was wounded when he didn't run away from a grenade thrown into a rice bin. Or, maybe I should say he was wounded because he was running instead of being smart and hitting the ground so that any shrapnel would fly over him.
