September 22, 1776: Nathan Hale, about to be hung for spying on the British declares, "I regret that I have but one life to give to my country."
Septemebr 22, 1968: Lieutenant John Kerry contemplates his decision to use his three scratches, two of them self-inflicted, to leave the military, go home and falsely acuse other soldiers who have died for their country of being war criminals.

Contemplating just leaving then, or inflicting a Zippo lighter burn for a fourth PH and maybe reporting he'd single-handedly captured an entire VC division with said Zippo, scoring a MOH? Maybe he just had more unexposed 8mm film left. Maybe he couldn't find his Magic Hat or his Wonder Dog. The possibilities are endless.

I think I got the date wrong. September of '69 would have been between his third boo-boo and leaving. _________________ Truth, sir, is a cow which will yield such people no more milk; and so they are gone to milk the bull.

Everyone gets that one wrong. Although there are no ACCURATE accounts of what he said, it is far more likely that he said:
“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
There is a BIG difference between "give to" and "lose for". _________________ USMC 69-72, 7th Comm, 3rd MarDiv, FMFPAC

gee cipher, I hate to disagree, but I think he said:
'I regret that I have but one losing position for my country; if I live, I vow to have multiple losing positions in the future' _________________ Stevie

If Nathan Hale were John Kerry, he'd've said he had one life to regret losing before he gave it, but then regreted giving it after losing it. _________________ USMC 69-72, 7th Comm, 3rd MarDiv, FMFPAC
