Here's a free site - you need a first and last name and it doesn't include any Reserve time you might have done after active duty, (I know, because it has my rate at the time I left active, but not my promotion during my time in the Reserves) but it will at least give you whether or not someone by that name served and the rank they achieved:

Is it possible to be Regular Army with 20 years active duty and still only be an E-6? Just asking. I'm not familiar with Army advancements and how quick you go up the ranks.

I'm pretty sure that current Army regs allow E6s to stay to 20 years if the retention control point (RCP) is set there. While RCPs can vary with time, historically, that's been the RCP for E6. What this means is that is as long as you can serve if you are a nonpromotable E6; you have to retire. To be retained after 20 yrs, generally you need to be on the promotion list to E7 (or have already been promoted to E7, E8, or E9).

My memory is that the 20 year RCP for E6 has been fairly consistent since the early 1980s.

If I have time, I'll research Army regs and see if it's a hard and fast requirement that non-promotable E6s retire at 20 or if it's subject to variation.

An update to my previous post this topic.

Army Regulation 601-280, Army Retention Program, governs the retention of Enlisted soldiers on active duty. Table 3-1, page 8, indicates that non-promotable E6s must retire at 20 years active service. The reg indicates elsewhere that enlisted soldiers may be retained no more than 29 days past this date in order to meet service obligations, and that the 20 year limit is non-waivable.

The publication is available on-line from the US Army Publishing Directorate web site, www.usapa.army.mil, in PDF format.

The current version of the reg became effective in 1999. It changed RCPs for enlisted soldiers. However, if my memory is correct, the 20 year RCP for E5(P) and E6 was not changed. (Never was a personnel type, so I could be mistaken about the last.)

Short answer is that, yes, you can stay for 20 in the Army and retire as an E6. However, that's as long as you can stay without being selected for E7.
