Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. There were a number of responses on varying points regarding Kerry. They revolved around wide ranging issues, from whether Kerry was truely anti GI, to whether we should have kept fighting in 'Nam.
I agree that in his congressional testimony, Kerry was irresponsible. He relayed second hand testimony that was false, though I don't think it's been proven he was aware that it was false.
Now I'm left with motivation; was he anti GI? (Nothing I've seen makes me believe that he was). Was he trying to carve out a political niche? (At the time Kerry came out, it was a risky thing to do, but I think he was astute at seeing sentiment changing regarding the war. I would not rule this out).
Now where do we go from here? I've said earlier that I don't blame GWB for avoiding 'Nam since he had that opportunity. Kerry served honorably and well by most accounts-and it is his time after service that most vets seem to question. I have reservations as well. However, I never have been a one issue voter. I love our country, and I want to see it led as effectively as possible. Here are my concerns:

Military strenth depends upon economic strength. We have added unprecedented and dangerous debt over the past 3 and 1/2 years. Debt that our current generations of soldiers will be paying for. Social security, medicare, and all government entitlements, including military pensions, are now at risk. We are encouraging off-shoring, even of military production.
We haven't undertaken steps to develop alternative energy in any meaningful way.
Our infrastructure is corroding.
As we try to secure democracy for Iraq, we aren't putting America first. What is our vision for the future? It seems all we are doing is trying to hold onto our past, at the expense of our future. We don't make anything anymore. We have fewer engineers than China. We are by far the largest debtor nation in the world.
Frankly-I've had it. I hope most vets are able to put aside their mistrust of Kerry in the next election. We are on a dangerous track that is unsustainable. Will Kerry do better? I honestly don't know. All I know for certain is Mr. Bush's track record... I'm willing to roll the dice on Kerry.

Unprecedented debt?

I suggest you research WWII. We aren't even close to the level of debt that this nation has endured and prospered in rebuilding from (btw, when you research the level of debt for WWII, don't forget to include all those loans that the US either forgave or never collected).

But what difference will it make if the nation doesn't survive? Because that is exactly what is at stake. The survival of western civilization, including the United States. We have no choice. We win the war, or we cease to exist.

To think that a man who actively took part in subverting the efforts of his nation in the last great war that we won (the cold war) is the appropriate leader? Is like choosing Benedict Arnold to lead us in the Revolution. An action doomed to failure by intention.

How do you justify John F. Kerry's meetings with Madame Binh and the other representatives of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong, Nathan Hale (I find your use of that user name distasteful and offensive)?
